Low freon will cause the compressor to short cycle, when the compressor runs the pressure in the low line is pulled down and the low pressure switch turns it off. Not running the pressure builds up and turns it back on. In the old days there was no low pressure switch, with no freon to carry the oil the compressor was destroyed.
Just a little low on freon can make it get too cold and it freezs if you in position to check the freon level you'll find with the system on high and the engine reved up the low pressure is below 25PSI. fill it to reved up is above 25 and your problem will go away. Low on freon will make it cold enough to frezze up and then warm up as the air does'nt go though the ice. it'll work good as you start up till it frezzes and after it's stopped up with ice it blows warm (it's really too cold). the more freon in the system the warmer it'll all blow because all the pressures are higher and it's the difference in pressures that make it cold.
you have moisture in the system this causes your expancion valve to freeze up an stop working, thats why it works for sort time and when it de-freezes stars working again. you need to do a EVAC & RECHARGE with a good AC service equipment, specially attention to pull vacumm por at least 20minutes so you get all moisture out of the system.
Most probably low on freon, but check and watch your compressor make sure the clutch engages and runs and does cycle. IF it doesn't run at all most probably low freon, if it runs but cycle frequently, it is low on freon also hold the bigger of the two lines going to the compresson one should be cold and one should be hot. If not probably low on freon if everything else checks out, There are many other reason it might not blow cold but this is what your need to check first and is the most common problem
