Question about 2000 Chevrolet Impala

1 Answer

Fuel problem help please. my car is bogging down and jerking when i drive. if i let off gas all the way it dies. then it will start running just great for awhile then start jerking and surging etc. when it dies it is hard to restart and will run all jerky. then again i can get it restarted and it runs like butter. i changed fuel filter yesterday as the problem began soon after i had gotten what iassume to be bad gas. i added lucas and new gas yet problem persists. maybe it just needs a good blow out or do you think it could be the fuel pump? it is so random, running well then the next time like it is fuel starved. help i am desperate.thank you for your time.karen

Fuel pump sound like a good place to start it may not be getting enough pressure to the fuel thus not sending enough of it at a time to explain why it runs good sometime i think it is primeing and filling the lines once it shuts off and so for a litle while it has enough gas but one you use the gas that was ready in the line it can't get enough to run correctly. have it tested.

If you have any rubber fuel lines in the fuel system, I would replace them. Over a period of time the insides of the hoses swell up and stop the fuel flow to the engine.

Car idles fine, but sputters, bogs and dies if gas pedal is pressed.

new spark plugs this decade. (a tune up?0
the filter is part of all 60k tuneups. letting it clog wrecks good pumps.
my wild guess, its lack of fuel flow, do to old filter.
or low fuel pressure.
car is identical to a Corolla. so is not unique or rare as some Geo cars are.
the cam belt not changes, invites valve kissing piston tops. BOOM
end of engine. (costs more to fix then worth of car)
the word is bogging, my engine bogs
if if bogs WOT (wide open throttle) and dont catch up < ITS NOT THE TPS. ever.
tps bad causes short bogs, called hesitations.
The map sensor , is what measure air flow and the ECU matches fuel to this air flow.
my guess, is it does that, but fuel pressure is like 15PSI, bad.

Fuel delivery problems?

Okay this vehicle is 27 years old. It may well have out lived its usefulness. Have you thought about getting a newer vehicle that does not cause such problems?

The mass air flow often goes bad on them. Did you have the vehicle scanned. Try unplugging the mass air flow and driving it. It is built into the air intake hose. If that does not change things, check the fuel pressure, and the throttle position sensor.

Hope this helped
