2005 Prius change in MPG after dealer service

Took my Prius in for a 5,000 mile service. They also replaced the engine air filter and the cabin air filter. Before service I got 49 MPG and now I get around 42 MPG (with effort). I drive the same 100 miles roundtrip to and from work every day and nothing has changed. The dealer just says that 42MPG is darned good mileage. I have also noticed that there are fewer little car symbols on my energy recovery screen.

Any ideas?

I had the exact same experiance. I remember driving home the day I purchased mine in Aug 2005 and thinking at this rate i could get 500 miles out of this tank easy! It was darn close. I had my 5k oil chg done at the DEALERSHIP so I assume they use/used the correct oil and I too noticed virtually the exact same drop in mpg. I badgered the service people for an answer. I swear they have a script because the first thing I was told was that "42 mpg was darn good" I told them no it isnt when you advertise 50/60mpg. They commented then that the mpg they advertise is what the EPA got when they tested the car and is what they must advertise but that they felt 42mpg was more like it. I pushed harder and a service mgr at the dealership handed me an article where a survey was done on Yahoo and the avg mpg achieved was 42-43mpg. I give up. To date I have 130k miles on my 2005 fully loaded (gps/bluetooth/etc) Prius, have never done anything more than have the oil changed (and tires of course) and I still get appx 43mpg. So after over 4yrs of driving it with no change in mpg I must say it is what it is, but I know they did something to it back then!

I have to say that I had almost the exact same problem. The only difference was that I didn't take it to the dealer. I had to get a firmware update done because my car kept shutting off for no reason. The dealership wanted $450 for it, but a local mechanic did it for $300. I was getting about 48.5 before. Now I get 42.5. What's the deal?

Within the last year my Prius' mileage has gone from 45-50 mpg to 30-35 mpg. I have had the car maintained at the dealership. The service department says that they can't do anything unless the "service engine" light comes on.

What was the weight of the oil that was put into the engine when it was changed? Prius engines are VERY PICKY about the proper weight of the engine oil. Trust me. I see this quite often. The wrong weight oil can do bizzare things, and def lower your mileage. Something you can check: Take off the tube leading to the throttle body, and look down into the intake. Do you see any oil laying in the intake manifold? If so, you DEF have the wrong weight oil. This will NOT set a Check Engine light, either. Hope this helps.

Why would they change the cabin air filter? I think that it only calls for a check at 30,000 miles/

Instead of an EGR valve you have variable timing on your cam shaft. I would talk to a Toyota dealer. There may be a service bulletin about replacing the ECM (control box) for the variable cam timing which would effect the fuel economy of your vehicle the same way a stuck or plugged EGR valve would.

I was recently changed the cabin filter on my TL 04, i don't think it necessary, it is more like optional but if you change filter for your engine, why not change the air you breathe inside the car. After i change my cabin filter i noticed more air are been circulate through out and also fresher than before. the price for a cabin fiter is also relatively cheap less than $10. took me 15 mins to do it. check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQsDxqxyeqM

Its telling you that you have a recommended service coming up at 30K miles. The dealer will reset the light when you bring the car in. Nissan recommends you to do your maintence's every 7500 miles. A 30K service will consist of an oil change, change air filter, coolant flush, replace PCV valve, in cabin air filter, along with checking many other systems in your vehicle. Hope this helps.

I have just over 60000 mile on my 02 Yukon Denali and my "engine service soon" just came on. Should I take it to the gmc dealer or my nearest Union 76 gas station who has mechanics that can work on cars...

service engine soon is a driver/owner reminder, check your engine oil or rest it after changing to 100%, if you have the owners guide book, read it and follow the maintenance procedure to avoid severe damage to your car

Wher do you install a cabin filter on a 2005 Ford Escape XLT?

Yes you have one and it runs about $15.00.

Looking for a picture for you but it should be in the engine compartment area, passenger side, just below the windshield on the firewall area...or JUST above it.

But looking for a picture for you. It states that you should change it about every 150,000 miles.
