Question about 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

2 Answers

Will not start.

When I turn the ignition, it fires one time then just turns over without firing. Then I turn the key completely off and try again, the same thing happens, one fire and then just turns over without firing. Hope someone can help me out. Thank you.

GREASEDOG - I used a code reader from Autozone this past weekend and it read PASS with no code errors. This is my daughters car. She had a friend change the heater core and I noticed the radio does not work now either. The person at Autozone said the codes might have been erased if taking the dash apart wasn't done right. Any additional thoughts? Thanks for your help.

It sounds like either the relay for the fuel pump and\or fuse is bad or the crankshaft sensor is not picking up a signal which is located by the crankshaft pulley

when you say -turn over do you mean firing-turning over to me means the starter motor is cranking or turning over-firing is when combustion happens in the cylinders-as far as the cranking continuing-try some wd40 in the ignition switch-it may be hanging up-Denny

Turned the key and the car did not start, car was not firing and no noise from the starter ... then turned the key and the car started ... went out for drive and came home ... turned the key again and...

Hmmm it could be the ignition itself, sometimes the inside parts wear out and do not engage as they should. The next indicatioin that its your ignition is the key will stick in it from time to time. Als, I know this sounds wacky, but when it wont start, put your foot on the brake, put the car in neutral and try to start the car. See if this works also.

could be a crank sensor ,or the plug into the ignition coil you fitted has come loose ,also the chip may have fallen out of the key ,try the spare key and check the connections on the coil you fitted and see what happens ,then if it still doesnt start then have it towed because if its a 2007 model the software is no doubt encoded on a vehicle this late ,also the coil could have packed up again if the alternator is pushing out too many volts, the ECU could have developed a fault and without the correct software to try to diagnose the problem?? but check the coil connection first though.

No fire to coil

Before you replace the ignition coil, make sure that you do the folowing. Turn ignition to on, move automatic gear shift lever through the gears and when you move it back to park shove it harder than normal. Turn key completely off and then try to start the car.
If the car is not sufficiently in PARK or the park sensor switch is defective it will act like the car is turned off. Also you can try starting in NEUTRAL to troubleshoot whether the car will get fire.

Change oil soon light. how to get it to shut off

Answer The "change oil" light on a 2001 Grand Prix is reset by pressing the gas pedal three times while the vehicle is in "accessory" mode:

1. Turn the car off.
2. Place the ignition key in the "on" position, without starting the car. That is, turn the key forward to the place right before it fires the engine.
3. Place your foot on the gas pedal and press it all the way down three times, waiting approximately one second between presses.

If done correctly, the "change oil" light will flash repeatedly, and will then reset.

Please note that it is rare to do this successfully on the first try; if it does not work, turn the car off and try the procedure again, varying the wait slightly between pedal presses at each attempt
