Question about 1991 Volkswagen Passat

Open Question

1991 vw passat 9A 16v 2l B Charging and instrument cluster problem

One day car did not start-turn key and nothing at all.(no power to inst. cluster no turning, nothing)
One hour later it did turned on and cranked. and run fine.
Next day repeated.Battery was dead.When jumped jumper cable melted.The alternator was shorting.
Replaced battery and alternator.
But alternator is not charging.Alternator tested as good.Replaced anyway, for another alternator that also tested as good just for the heck of it.

Still not charging and whole instrument cluster and radio have no power from the very first replacement repair till now.

Car will run just fine with out other el. problems as far the battery have charge above 6-7 v.

I checked fuses in fuse/relay panel.Did not see any fuse burned.
Is there fusible link on charging system or other fuse or relays to check besides the ones on the fuse/relay panel?
I there relay that control this?

I know that is grounded good.
I know that is connected to + battery good.
Alt+battery good.
There is small blue wire running from alternator?????? called the alt. control wire.
I think is says d+ or something on the alt.terminal next to it.

It seems that something prevents the alternator to output power.
I measured the alt. terminal + and ground when connected and running and all I read is the battery voltage dropping.

I think the blue small wire and instrument cluster are close connection to this problem.

Unless there is fuse or relay that I missed to check.
other possibilities- ECU.
-Wiring harness.

First- where is all the fuses? and relays to check? fusible links?
second -what is the blue wire ?
third-instrument cluster involved?

keep in mind that everything works besides inst cluster and charging when battery have charge above 6-7v.

This car have disconnected and missing ABS and Security .
Run grate for about a year till this happened. Rebuilded engine....Clean well maintained..

the voltage regulator on the newer cars are in the pcm(computer) if its bad then the computer will need to be replaced but it sounds to me like it is alright. is the battery dieing out? if not, the alternator and the voltage regulator is working properly

Check on ebay, I had the same prob with mine, 3 lights blew out. Check s.gif12v_electronics, NEW MERCEDES VW BMW DASH INSTRUMENT CLUSTER BULBS 1.5W. This is where i bought mine and have not had any prob. No dealer or parts house will carry this bulb seperate.

A friend of mine has a VW Sharan V6 that done almost the same things and it was the electric water pump on the front bottom right of the engine that seezed up( yours is most likely doing the same), it's a black cylindrical sausage shape but a little thicker in size.The water leeks into the motor when it seezes and causes a intermittent short circut.

I got the same car with the same problem it was the belts, drive belt and alternator belt, due to the weather the tention get loos.

Turn off alarm after jump starting car


You need the VW scanner to reset the system and reprogram it after loss of power to the system. Aren't VW's great?

sounds like fuse issues to me. refer to your manual or get a friend to check the fuses in veichle to make sure that there is no issue with any of them.

2001 cadillac dts..... My cluster wont stay on.. I turn the key on and it lights up as if it was gonna work.. As soon as I start the car it goes off and its all black. Nothing works except check engine...


You are having a Battery Issue or a Charging Issue. When you crank the engine over, the Draw of POWER is shutting down the Instrument Cluster. Fix the Charging Problem and then see what you have...

Cant find fuse box in W8 2003 VW Passat any body have an idea? Tried passanger side were it should be but air bag is at that side! Regards John


VW never had their fuse boxes and relay panel at the passenger side. It's always where the instrument cluster is located. This would always be the case, doesn't matter if you live in a country with right hand drive or left hand drive, it is always situated where the instrument cluster is located. The reason is because all information that's vital to your vehicles operation is monitored through it's instrument cluster through warning lights (idiot lights). VWs designed it with this in mind "electric current diminishes the farther it has to travel from it's electrical source". Pry off the driver side cover if not mistaken.

Turn the key on my car a 2001 vw passat engine


Check in the black power box under the hood. Pull cover off and there is a diagram explaining what is what. Check the ignition fuse and fuel pump relay.

Intermitant electrical faults


some lose connection at dashboard instrument cluster -ve earthing point is lose, so it is happening , or any socket is lose.

Rpm s dont work on dash


this is most likely to be a sensor coming from your engine. im not sure where it is though.
