Limp in mode

Transmission wont shift to 3rd gear. yes the check engine is on
how do I delete or fix the "limp in" mode? I own a 2004 intrepid with 92,000 miles. runs fine until eng and trans get to operating temps. That when it goes into limp mode. Diconnecting battery cable resets the PCM and reoccurs within 2-3 miles at hiway speeds. The trans shifts fine and there is no noticeable rpm fluctuations. Have removed sensor plug ins and cleaned with electrcal contact cleaner. Removed and replugged the PCM plug ins. Looks like they have a silicon grease so did not spray them. This problem seems to correlate with the operating temperature of the engine. Tans ATF has good color and shifts smoothly prior to limp mode. Is the software of the PCM reliant on ECM monitoring info? Can O2 sensors, mass air flow, egr, cam sensors or crank position sensors faultor and send into limp mode or is it soley the trans data from input output sensors. If trans sensors bad why is it temp sensitive does the trans have internal trans temp sending unit? I can understand that if it does have trans temp sending unit that it might be at a threshold that the PCM evaluates since winter does occur and cold weather and hydraulics sometime don't cooperate until warmed to operating temperature...

Hooked up OBDII and got threedifferent codes 0750, 0755, 0760...all are solenoid malfunctions. As vehicle gets warmer solenoid in lower gear malfunctions. Operating temp of 208 degrees and low hi fan speeds are functioning. Trans oil and filter look normal... average filings on magnet in pan.

When at highway speeds of 65mph or above car will randomly jolt and rpm's are between 4 to 6 thousand to maintain speed. Placing shifter to neutral/ignition off (while still moving) and back on/ drive position eliminates problem for varying periods of time. Check engine light and 3 various codes also intermittenly turn off. Sometimes car can go at highway speeds for 100 plus miles with no problem until braking to less than 20mph where above symptoms reappear.

Is this the Transmission Control Module in need of replacement?

Your trans has a serious issue and most likrely will require an overhaul, the limp mode is due to some kind of serious internal failure, run the PCM codes.

My 1999 clk 320 suddenly will not shift out of 3rd gear, its been going good for 184000 miles and all service has been done by a mercedes mechanic

sounds like the transmission is in limp home mode where it won't shift out of second gear. this is a fail safe mode. If the check engine light is on too then its probably not seeing one of the speed sensors in the transmission. Just need to have the codes pulled in the transmission control module.

1996 gmc jimmy will not shift to 3rd gear

Hi, It may be in LIMP mode.

What is "limp-home mode" ? This is a fault mode in which the transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure. The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.

Common failures on 4L60E, symptom any possible repair:

Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the under-hood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.

No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter :ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Car goes into gear but feels very sluggish like the brakes are dragging, but it will roll easily (starts out in 4th gear), you manually shift to 2 to get it moving, once it's moving you put it back in OD and the car shifts 3rd to 4th on its own and locks the converter at the appropriate time: ShiftB solenoid failed: Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

Trans seems noisy when moving in 1st and Reverse, noise goes away instantly if you shift to N or the trans goes into 3rd gear: Reaction planetary is worn out due to high miles or insufficient lubrication. Not a critical failure, but not a good sign either. R&R sooner rather than later.

3rd gear starts, can manually shift through all gears. When car has been turned off for a bit, then back on it will run normally.: VSS dropoff w/ Hi-stall converter. The rpms are too high, but VSS is showing no movement. Happens after a tire burning take-off. Doesn't store a code, will not throw a CEL (I've heard that it will store a code if it happens 3 or more times). Cure: Reprogram PCM for VSS dropoff -- PCMforLess knows about it.

If you can get the Jimmy for no more then $500.00 and the engine sounds good and body is good, you may want to invest in the repair of the jimmy. Also note that to have a close look at the fuel line along the frame on the drivers side just by the back doors, the line is know to corroded there on all the SUV's

4L 60E - 2001 k1500 will not shift into 3-4. Oil is not burn't and stifts great into1-2

  • No 3rd or 4th gear: “3-4” clutches are worn out. R&R. The car is safe to drive (in 2) until you can get it fixed.
  • Trans shifts into gear harshly, car feels sluggish off the line, No 1st, 4th or TCC lockup available, Manual 2nd, 3rd and Reverse are only available gears, CEL is on: Transmission is either in limp-home mode or has lost electrical power. If there are lots of error codes in the PCM, check the under hood fuse that powers the transmission, and if it pops again, look for a short in that circuit like an O2 sensor harness touching exhaust. Otherwise, check PCM codes for a particular fault in the transmission causing the PCM to put it in limp-home mode.
  • No 1st or 4th available; trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : Shift A solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.
Check to see if your transmission is in the limp mode, which would only give you 2nd, 3rd and reverse gears. No 1st or 4th gear.

96 Yukon Transmission

Check the transmission fluid level and condition of the fluid. It should be bright red like Strawberry colour. If it's dark like burgundy, then the fluid is burnt and the transmission needs to be serviced. Fluid and filter changed.
Have the Truck's computer scanned for any DTC codes. Most parts store like Auto Zone or Parts Source will scan for free. If there is a engine management Issues, it may be running your Yukon on a limp mode.
Limp mode will not let the transmission shift past 3rd gear and the OD does not engage, i had a cracked ignition cap and the computer put me on a limp mode once.
Good luck and hope this helps. Keep me posted to please.

1999 dodge intrepped wont shift out of first gear

Won't shift out of first, or is stuck in second? These transmissions will go into limp mode which sticks it in 2nd gear. Is the check engine light on? This will most likely lead you to the fault if it is.

Limp in mode

Your shift control computer is getting a bad sensor value. So either a shift control sensor has gone bad, or there is a problem with your transmission. Either take it to a mechanic or buy a scan tool so you can find out the exact nature of the problem if you're going to attempt to fix this yourself.

Transmission problem

That transmission is the 42 LE,used to be known as the 606,the sister trans of the minivans' 42 TE,aka 604.Yes,first and foremost, the Check Engine light needs to be read with a scan tool, and the trouble codes recorded,or written down.Diagnosing the trouble codes is part of determining the problem. It is a step by step procedure eliminating or confirming problem areas.Input and output speed sensors and PRNDL needs to be observed,as well as the CVI's or Clutch Volume Indexes.Chrysler's Transmission Control Module's (TCM) monitors clutch pack clearances (there are 5 packs) by an assigned numerical value. It can be observed by a technician, and known by the numeric value,if the clutch pack has lost clearance and worn out. Many things to look at by a qualified technician.
