1996 Grand Am

My car is acting like it wants to start but will not do so. My husband has charged the battery and we know our fan does not run unless its directly connected to the battery. What could be wrong with the car? Please help its my only vehicle.

Without actually hearing how it sounds I can only offer a few possibilities. One is the fuel pump. If you stick your head under the hood can you smell gasoline as someone tries to start the car? If not it could be the fuel pump.

It could also be the distributor is out of time or the fuel filter. I would first suggest you locate the fuel filter, pull it off and see if it's clogged.

the Grand grans? LOL ! sure, cell phones suck. for typing,.

my guess, the Battery drains dead, parked. ?
ok there are only 2 causes.
1: as always bad batteries can do that.... (i use test battery from on other car, unless new $125 batteries are cheap to you.
or charge IT , and and use my load tester.
$20 at Harbor FRIGHT(pun)

2: or is phantom drain,
here is page that covers all ways to find a drain.

if car battery drains driving, check the charging system.
but you said parked, which means keys in pocket.

Alternator bad know

Take the car to a local Autozone and have the Alternator tested, it is free. Also when the "Battery" light comes on it doesn't mean there is a problem with the battery persay it means the battery is not getting charged up while you drive.

My 1996 jeep grand cherokee wouldnt start, acted like a dead battery. (had battery and alternator tested both good) when I jumped it it started right up but as soon as I took my foot off the gas it

Have throttle body cleaned and "minimum air rate" adjusted. Computer looses learned memory when battery is disconnected and has to start over again.

1996 jeep grand cherokee stalls when i put it in gear the RPM's drop down and it stalls it also acts up when i push on the brakes like its running out of gas. After it stalls it wont start unless i leave...

Try looking at your air filter. You could have a vacuum leak, like you already said. Also, check your coolant sensor and intake air temp sensor, if equipped.

96 grand am 2.4L DOHC, replaced the Crankshaft sensor and the throttle body sensor. Engine is hard to start and won't stay running. Sounds like when a choke is stuck and backfires when it quits running

Check the charging system13.65 volts,to 14.25 volts at the battery when running and lights and blower fan on high.Check the battery connections, that they are clean. The fuel pressure maybe low, check the fuel filter, and the fuel pressure to see if the fuel pump is weak.

I had to jump start my 96 GC. It won't stay running unless I give it gas. Tow truck driver thinks its the alternator. Yes or no?

Possible, But it should idle with the jumper cable hooked up. after charging the battery, does it start on its own?
