Question about Mitsubishi Diamante

Car overheated, radiator has hole in it. Clicking sound when engine is on and I have pressure tested the head and the gasket seems to not be blown. Smoke is also coming out of tailpipe when engine is running?

Severe overheating can warp the piston rings, causing it to burn oil. The clicking I would guess to be a valve lifter, again caused by warpage. That might go away with driving.

You can try an oil additive. Engine Restore helped my car's oil burning. STP oil treatment quieted the clicking.

But I guess the call is yours. Is it worth fixing the radiator if the engine is about shot? That would depend on the age of the car and its other problems.

You could have a broken cylinder head gasket...you are loosing water thru the engine pistons that is why you have smoke on tail pipe when engine is running.

our simple test if you have a blown gasket is to fill the radiator up to the rim and then be carefull, do not stay in front of the radiator then ask someone to start your engine and watch the water in the radiator, if the water rushes outside the mouth of the radiator, then you have a blown gasket.

if not, then put the gasket cover and run the engine for 20 mins and watch the temp gauge, it should not over heat.

My 2000 hyundai sonata blew an upper radiator hose. I replaced it and it still is overheating . What is the problem


Overheating could be due to a restriction in a cooling passage, a problem with the water pump, or a blown head gasket.
If you get way too much pressure in the cooling system, even before the engine is warm, try a cylinder compression test. It's probably a warped head or blown gasket (or both).
If the compression test seems fine, you should reverse flush the system to try dislodge any restrictions.

How do I check for a blown head gasket on my 1990


Pretty much same answer as I gave for 87 Reliant see below. Shops have equipment to do cylinder leakage test. Do basic stuff below before doing last test ...cylinder leakage...which costs $$$.

Main point you are losing antifreeze/water. Check to see if you have water on the dipstick mixed in with oil. If so...probably a head gasket. If oil looks normal..... Before you do any test, tighten every hose connection. Check for loose connection into antifreeze reservoir. Sometimes there are small cracks on top which lets out pressure from cooling system. Look for leaks on water pump and radiator. Look at spot where you park the car...any liquid on floor? Not sure?..Put piece of cardboard under car to see if liquid is dripping from car. No leaks?...Start with a pressure test of the system. The pressure test is simply equipment that replace the radiator cap, a hand pump connected to it then air is pumped into cooling system. You watch the gauge to see if pressure is dropping. If pressure does not drop ..problem is most like a worn radiator pressure cap or stuck thermostat.. Do not buy the kind with button on cap to push down and release pressure. get original type and correct pressure. If overheating still, thermostat could be stuck, replace. Overheating of engine causes vapor lock, bubbles in fuel, which causes car to stall and kill. When cools off, fuel cools down and fuel will flow through fuel system again. Large amount of oil disappearing with overheating also sounds like head gasket or cracked head....Tighten up all bolts to gaskets, look for oil leaks on garage floor or driveway. If engine has developed a miss when running, pull plugs out and look for wet fouled plug. If antifreeze leaking into cylinder...plug tip will be whitish, if oil leaking into cylinder, grimey oil fouled. Do compression test on cylinder that is fouled and that will pinpoint if bad head gasket or cracked head. When doing compression test, radiator cap is removed and you listen to hear bubbles in radiator from the cylinder leaking into cooling system. 87 Reliant not worth pulling engine apart if head gasket or cracked head. Best oil treatment to reduce oil consumption is "Engine Restore" Used on my 58 Impala 348 tri power for 28 years. If I did not add it after oil changes it used oil and smoked....I swear by it for ANY engine after 100,000 miles.

It is best to be systematic about this. It could be either the water loss or the overheating which is the basic cause, either one could come first.

- there is a test for combustion gases in the water jacket, from a blown head gasket. This will very quickly cause overheating, and the excess pressure will blow the water out the overflow reservoir. If the car has already overheated and died, this is unfortunately quite likely

- the temperature sensor in the block may have failed. This will prevent the fans from running when the engine overheats, and you can see this. The fans are not driven by a belt. P68....

- the thermostat may have stuck closed. You will have to get it out and test it, but this is not difficult. See p328

- this model of Camry has a plastic top tank to the radiator, which eventually cracks. Look there carefully.

- it may be that a radiator hose has gone soft and closed up. Check they are allowing good coolant flow.

- it could be that in a car this age that the radiator has silted up and is not allowing coolant through. Disconnect the top and bottom radiator hoses, when cool, and run water through from a garden hose to get some idea about that.

My 2001 Ford Taurus keeps running too hot to safely drive. Whenever the car is started fluid immediately gushes out of the plastic resevior that you put the water/antifreeze leading to the radiator. I...


You have an air bubble at the top of the engine.
The antifreeze spewing out of the overflow happens due to your perfectly functional radiator cap
passing the overheated coolant/air mixture out of the system into the reservior (in an attempt
to relieve overpressurization of the cooling system)
The sudden nature of your overheating comes from the boiling of the inadequate amount of
coolant/antifreeze in your engine, since it cant properly cool the engine, so it boils (overheats quickly), and pressure rises immediately within the cooling system.
The Fix is free: locate and open the (air) bleeder port at the top of the engine, and add the usual
50% coolant/50% water mixture to the radiator until the radiator is full to the level indicated in
your owner's manual (or the "Full" line). Then close the bleeder port and replace the rad (radiator)
cap.
The air bleeder port is normally located near the thermostat, and should be opened each time
that coolant is added to the radiator. The air bleeder port need not be opened when adding
50/50 coolant to the reservior, since the rad cap is going to be closed while adding coolant
to this part of the cooling system.
Warning: driving beyond the point where your engine temperature gauge indicates overheating will
destroy the car's engine - it'll seize up due to overheating, and the only fix for a seized/burned-up
engine is replacement (of the engine). Seizing an engine is really easy with an air bubble in the
top of the engine - you could easily burn up/warp the head, necessitating replacement of the head
and head gask

My radiator was changed and the thermastat but my car is still over heating, why could that be? nohoses r broken.


sounds like a head gasket blown, when engine is cold, remove rad cap and make sure rad is full, start engine and see if bubbles are pushed out of the rad filler spout, a blown head gasket will pressure up your coolant system, was the rad changed because of overheating, do you have the thermostat installed wrong? the sensor side toward engine. if head gasket is ok, next you could check your rad cap, is the gasket ok? can you check if it holds the required pressure. might need replacing. also if you could pressure test the coolant system and see if it holds.

sounds like a blown head gasket. coolant being pushed into combustion chamber and combustion being pushed into the cooling system. combustion gasses pressurizing the coolant system will cause overheating.

You have blown head gasket mate. The pressure from the blown gasket may have blown a hole in the radiator which is why the fluid is comeing out. dont drive while overheating engine will be no more good also check oil for water it will be a brown colour if there is water in it that 100% blown head gasket.

Overheating all the time


First, anytime a thermostat is overheated, it's ruined.

Second, if this car has electric fans, are they running when they are supposed to? If not, replace the fan control module, and/or test/replace the fan motors.

When the radiator was replaced, were you certain to purge the radiator and engine of all air before replacing the radiator cap? When you refill an emptied system, you always start the engine and watch the fill level in the radiator, refilling as necessary until you know the thermostat has opened. You need to have the heatrer controls set to full hot as well. Once the radiator is filled, put the cap in place, and fill the reservoir to the level indicated for a hot engine.

Finally, check to make sure the lower radiator hose is not collapsing while driving. While this is difficult to check (because your going down the road), just replace it when you replace the thermostat.

All of this assumes you do not have a cracked head or blown head gasket.
