I have compression, gas and air to the combustion chamber, just no spark why won't it start?

If you don't have spark then that is your problem. First try changing the spark plugs and wires. If that doesn't fix it then it is the ignition system. Let me know if the first two don't fix it.

You could have gas fouled the plugs. If you pulled on and it is wet, it is fouled. Replace them.

Starter works trys tostart but wont

if it tries to start, i.e. it is catching check the level of fuel into the combustion chamber and the power of the spark.
If you crank over several times on a fully charged battery, remove one of the spark pluvs if it is a petrol/gas engine, and check the spark plug tip, it should be moist with gas/petrol or at the very least, smell stronly of it.
cHECK THE PLUGS ARE CLEAN, UNDAMAGED AND CORRECTLY ADJUSTED.
If you attach a plug lead to a plug and lean it on the engine and crank the starter over you should see a healthy blue spark between the electrodes.
If the fuel is there and the spark is there at the same time the engine should start, (assuming there is no makor internal problem.)

The issue might be the timing, getting the spark and the fuel to coincide in the combustion chamber when the piston is at the optimum position in the bore.


If there is a weak spark or too little fuel these should be investigated work away from the combustion chambers to the source of the fuel and electricity.
If the spark and fuel are healthy and the timing is okay check compression in the cylinders.
They should be healthy and withing a couple or five pounds of each other

It might be sensors playing up and affecting the ECU, (engine management system)


There is a lot to check, A GOOD MECHANIC SHOULD BE INVALUABLE TO DIAGNOSE.

I have a 1994 ford escort and it's not getting eoungh power I've change the battery, sparks plugs and the alternator don't know what else to do please help

Did you check the timing? If the timing is off there will be a reduction in performance and power will be greatly reduced. If the engine is "pinging" or "knocking" under heavy acceleration, your timing is advanced, and pre ignition is occurring (that's when the spark has ignited the fuel in the combustion chamber prematurely), resulting in a knocking sound. When the piston is compressing the air/fuel mixture within the combustion chamber, the spark plug produces a spark from current it receives from contacts closing in the distributor cap. (Where all the spark plug wires are plugged into) if that spark come BEFORE the piston finishes it up stroke or compression stroke, the piston is then being slowed down from the kinetic energy produced by the exploding fuel. Thats where we loose our power. Idealy, the spark should come AFTER the piston has rotated over the top of its stroke, It has reached its limit in compression and is on its way back down then the spark should ignite the compressed fuel, thus giving the piston an additional "shove" back down to start its "Power" stroke, once its reached the bottom of the power stroke (stroke #2 of 4) it is then carried back up for the "exhaust" stroke pushing the burnt fuel out of the combustion camber and into the exhaust manifold, one it has reached the top of that stroke it begins its journey back down to start stroke number 4, the Intake stroke. Drawing in air/fuel mixture to again be pushed back upward to compress the air/fuel, and repeat the process over and over again. Now that I have thoroughly bored you to tears, Yeah, check the engine timing, if its not the timing it may be a vacuum leak.

What is compression leak

Compression is what happens when the piston comes up and compresses the fuel/air mixture. Then the spark plug ignites it and the explosion drives the piston down in turn, turning the Crankshaft in turn making the car go. A compression leak is when this compressed fuel/air mixture is escaping from the combustion chamber.. This can happen 3 ways. 1. Bad piston rings, 2. Blown head gasket or cracked head or block, (usually caused by overheating), Or the least costly.. loose spark plugs.

Virtually all petrol engines today use an electric spark for ignition.Diesel engines rely on fuel compression for ignition, but usually also have glowplugs that preheat the combustion chamber to allow starting of the engine in cold weather. Other engines may use a flame, or a heated tube, for ignition.

Why does my 1995 mazda protege sputter and die when i accellerate

An engine needs three things to function correctly: (1) the right amount of fuel; (2) the right amount of air; and (3) an appropriate spark. I would also add a fourth point for a gasoline engine: appropriate compression in the engine. A worn-out engine won't perform well, even if items 1-3 look good.

Poor fuel flow is one possible cause of poor performance. A clogged fuel filter is only one possible cause of that. You might have a weak fuel pump, although with the electric fuel pump on this car, that would either have the car running or not running at all, not running poorly. You might very well have a clogged fuel injector--gas is getting there, but an inappropriate amount is getting sprayed into the combustion chambers. You might also have a clogged fuel intake screen inside the gas tank--the fuel pump might not be able to **** up enough fuel.

Air is another possibility. Check your air filter. Is it clean? A clogged air filter will cause incomplete combustion when you step on the gas because not enough air is getting in to create a proper air/fuel mixture. A simple test for this is to try running the car--VERY BRIEFLY--without the air filter. Does it run better? You should not run your car without an air filter for any longer than diagnostic reasons--sucking dust and dirt into your engine is a fast way to ruin it--but it's an easy and essentially free test you can perform. Or you can just replace the air filter if the one you pull out looks nasty.

A final consideration is spark. If you have a weak spark, you won't get as strong an explosion in your cylinders, yielding less power and stumbling. Or, if the spark comes at the wrong time, you'll have the same problem. You can check for a strong spark by taking a spark plug--an old one, a new one, one that doesn't even match your car, and using it to test the spark coming off each of your spark plug wires. Attach the plug to a wire you disconnect, ground the tip of the wire against exposed metal on your engine, and look for a nice healthy blue-white spark. If you see a yellow or orange spark, that's not so good. That could indicate a weak ignition coil--or also old spark plug wires that are leaking voltage. Spark plug wires should probably be changed every 5-6 years; they're not a lifetime part of your car.

A final consideration I didn't list previously is that you may have a bad O2 or other sensor that measures and adjusts the air / fuel mixture. A bad sensor will force your car's computer to operate on a default profile designed to let you limp home. However, it won't perform particularly well.

I have a 1999 gmc Yukon it is getting fuel and spark i even sprayed starter fluid in the intake but it still wont start it turns over good but wont start

ok make sure you have good fuel pressure
you must have good spark must fire a spark tester
if all that is good then check compression
and don't use STARTER FLUID on a GAS ENGINE it can blow a hole through the piston

Check your spark plugs to make sure they are dry. If they're wet they'll extinguish the spark before it can make contact with the fuel, thus preventing starting. If your plugs are really wet, leave them out of the cylinder heads and use compressed air to dry the combustion chamber and plugs. If compressed air is not available, leave them open to air dry. Once everything is dry, reconnect your spark plugs and try to start again.
