Sounds like an electrical problem... check the Huge blue fuse under the hood on the right block of the fuse clusters..... THere are two "ign" fuses u want the one on the right..... This panel is located just behind the power steering pump you will need to pull out and lift up to get it out :) hope this helps

I have a 1989 GMC C1500 1/2 ton pickup truck with a rebuilt tranny and an aftermarket 350 small block engine. The total mileage counter and the speedo doesnt work. We bought the truck used at an auction...

You have so many problems but not much to work with. Let's try something to help you out.
1. Instrument panel is it Analog or Digital
2.For speedo and tach do you have a speedo cable attach to the cluster?
If it's with speedo cable. Inside the transmission, there is a plastic gear could be worn. And the cable at the cluster's end could be stripped or not install properly.
If it's with the digital cluster the speedo works with a buffer module near the glove compartment (It convert the analog signal to digital signal for a digital cluster.
I could tell you more but need too many info.
There is many instrument panel depends on the options.

Hope it helps.

s-l1000-qrapc2eyzd0qf0shbbxh4pv4-3-4.jpg Find out instrument panel pinout (or electrical diagram) for wires testing.

1. There is more ground than only one and there more + wires at cluster panel. I will have to check those circuit and finally find the problem.

I have a 1997 buick le sabre with only 70k original miles... the speedometer works intermitently... now less and less... do I need to replace the whole instrument cluster? or is it a loose wire?? any...

you might want to check the speedo drive gears at the transmission and make sure they are in good shape and the gear that drives the electrical portion is spinning freely as any damage here will cause intermittent speedo operation.also if this is an electrically sent speedo from the tranny check the electrical connections.there is also a speedo buffer in the dash that rarely goes bad but is still a possibility.and lastly it could be the speedometer head thats the problem.when the speedo stops working does the odometer still work.if so then the problem is in the speedo head.i don`t remember which ones or what year they changed them but some you could just replace the speedo head and not the whole cluster assembly.

Speedo works sometimes and doesnt work sometimes?

It's unlikely you may have a loose instrument cluster connector unless someone was previously working around that area behind it. If no activity before hand then I'm guessing you may have a deteriorating instrument cluster that needs replacing. You can find people selling in ebay (lower price) or directly from the dealer.

Speedo problem

what you need to do make sure you have power to the speed sensor wire if not then trace back to fuse panel or relay usually the cover you take off under the hood has a scematic if there is power at the wires below the speed sensor you put in might call for a air gap adjustment some vehicles if mounted at flywheel threw tranny housing if mounted into side of tranny gear driven make sure the wires have good contact but where ever you said the car was kicked i would search for grounded wires this is uncommon with just a kick for a speed sensor to go
