Hello. Your car's cooling fan relays are somewhere in the fusebox/relay box. Also, your car has a 'fan switch' on the thermostat housing. If the 'fan switch' is in operable, the cooling fans won't work. It can be the thermostat housing seal/gasket. Good luck and keep me informed; if you want to.
There isn't a thermal switch, the cooling fan is turned on and off by the engine control module (ecm). The ecm uses the cylinder head temperature sensor as well as the a/c high pressure sensor to determine when to turn the fan on. The fan itself also has it's own control module for strategies and diagnostics. The cooling fan module is mounted on the fan itself.
not clear on a cooling module...there are relays which operate the cooling fans is this what you mean? there is atemp sensor that has wires connected to it mounted in the block that will tell the fans to come on to cool the car..if this sensor is bad the system will not function properly hence with the fans if they dont come on the car wont cool down either..need each one checked and replace whats broken..good luck..
Did you try your radiator fan relay ? if thats not it i would try the coolant temp switch for the engine control computer . lastly if those dont solve the problem you have ecu issues or the cooling fan module.
Try checking the fuse box under the hood. It should have a fuse marked cooling fan or cooling system. If the car does start, that means the computer isn't out, but maybe there is a bad relay by the fan or in the circuit or even the temp sensor may be bad. The fan won't run until the temp is high enough; usually by the time the thermostat opens.
Most Mfgr. install them close to the radiator...Look around it for a smallish electrical box, Black(?) maybe, you should see the wires. What makes you think it's a problem???
There are many things that can cause your radiator fans to not get power. However, the most common cause is the fan control module. Some people call it a "fan control relay", (including many aftermarket parts retailers) but it is actually a solid state control module, not a relay.
Check for power in and out of the module. It is best if you have access to a scan tool that has system test capabilities so you can command the fans to turn on with the computer. Otherwise, you will have to get your engine really hot and see if the power is being sent from the control module to the fan motors.
The fan control module is located on the inside of the left frame rail (driver's side) just behind the radiator. You will have to get under the vehicle to see it. It looks like the picture below.
There are not 2 fan switches for the fan. This switch sends a siganl to the Power Control Module (PCM) that turns on the fan via the fan relay.
This switch is OPEN when the engine is cool and closed when it is at operating temperature. You can read it with a meter cold and then HOT. If you do not read continuity when hot the switch is bad. If you do read continuity HOT then there is either a problem with the PCM (usually not) or the Fan Relay. (<-most often if temp switch is fine)
The device that turns the radiator fan on is a temperature sensor on the lower radiator hose towards the engine block. That could be the switch that you are referring to. When the coolant reaches a certain temperature it tells the radiator to turn on. The relay then sends the power to the fan.
"Already
had replaced: both cooling fans, fan control module, coolant temp
sensor, fan switch, 4 terminal connectors. No trouble codes reported in
VW electronic diagnostic test. 2 different VW dealers and and my
mechanic threw in the towel. Any suggestions greatly appreciated."
This is a common problem with the VW..and no one has an answer WHY. (including VW mechanics)
