The tranmission is in a safe mode. It is a 96 vw jetta.

I recently had the same problem in my Jetta. I had to have the whole gauge cluster replaced. Actually pretty common in older model VW.

I changed my battery in my 96 VW jetta and my radio went into safe mode ... I have the code but have no idea how to put it in


press button one as meany times as your first number and same for button two with second number and so on . your raidio should then start .

you might have bad ground to transmision that happen to my 01 jetta were it would just kind of rmp no shifting gears dealer said it was bad ground to trany

Activate the radio


Each radio has a unique code to deter theft, it is in the owners manual packet.

Radio code stuck in safe mode


I had this same problem when I had to disconnect the radio. If you take it to your local VW dealership they will give you the codes for free. Keep them though for when you have to redo it again. Every car is different.
