Question about 1981 Ford F 150

At 30 mph my 1992 ford truck has this wandering on the road and say in the turns. New tires 2 months ago, and tighten steering box. no leakage of fluids, power steering fluid full, and no noise with steering.

    frontend wanders it has been aligned has new tires was told that there is a service bulliten out but can't find

Or it could just be out of line or low tire presure i one tire

What kind and size of tires did you get? Some tires have been noted to cause such a issue for the first 500 or so miles on them. Also could be suspension issue like shocks or sway bar....

How to Diagnose an Alignment Problem?


tire wear is a method of diagnosing an alignment problem
abnormal wear on the insides or out sides of the tread indicates a problem with toe in/out and or camber settings
wheel wobble at speed ( 20 mph up ) indicates castor setting problems
steering wheel not self centering after turns indicates castor settings
steering wandering on the road indicates worn steering /ball joints and or alignment settings out
car running sideways ( crabbing)on the road indicates worn rear suspension parts , broken center bolts on leaf springs ,and rear alignment problems which will affect front end alignment
this is indicated by the steering wheel position off center when driving straight ahead

Steering has play in it. wanders on the road. tie rods ect. seems ok. could steering box be bad or can it be adjusted?


Rack and pinion worn, worn bushings, worn steering box, bad alignment, bad tire, lots of causes.

I have trouble steering...the truck wanders over the road...i have replaced idler arms, pitman arm, center link, shocks, brakes, new tires, front end alignment, bearings...the right front tire sits...


when the steering wheel is centred, the front wheels should both point slightly inwards.
after the amount of parts changed, i would recommend that you get the tracking checked at a garage using the proper, calibrated measuring systems, to make sure that the steering is set up properly and safely.

I have 97 chinok motorhome on e350 chasis. have replaced all 4ball joints, new shocks,front end inspected,new steering stabilizer,new tires but still hve a wander in steering. would any one have any ideas?...


You said that you had the front end inspected so I assume that all 4 tie rod ends are good and the front end was aligned. Changing parts without re-alignment can create a wandering condition.If that is the case then your problem could be play in the steering box, which should have some adjustment. You should also check the bushings in your control arms. They are rubber and will deteriorate over time, creating excessive play in the front end. Hope this helps.

Very bad vibration when braking and between 60-65 mph


you really need to get this into a steering specialist.vague,wandering steering with a click is a sure sign of worn components,the bad vibration is consistent with this.I had a callout to a vehicle 2 weeks ago with similar fault,it failed on the road and could have killed driver or another .there are a number of joints in this area that contribute to this sympton,they all need correct inspection.steering rack or box,rack ends,tie rod ends,balljoints,wishbone/arm bushes,steering universals etc.

I need step by step instructions to replace front struts.


1.Turn ignition to OFF position to place steering column in unlocked position.
2.Remove hub nut
3.Loosen, but do not remove, three top mount-to-shock tower
4.Raise vehicle on a hoist.
5.Remove tire and wheel assembly
6.Move brake caliper and wire out of the way
7.Remove brake rotor
8.Remove cotter pin from tie rod end stud and remove slotted nut.
Discard cotter pin and nut
9.remove tie rod from knuckle
10.Remove stabilizer bar link nut, and remove link from strut
11.Remove and discard lower arm-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt and nut. (A drift punch may be used to remove bolt.) Using a screwdriver, slightly spread knuckle-to-lower arm pinch joint and remove lower arm from steering knuckle.
12.Press halfshaft from hub
13.Remove shock absorber strut-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt. Using a large screwdriver, slightly spread knuckle-to-strut pinch joint, if required, for removal
14.Remove steering knuckle and hub assembly from shock absorber strut
15.Remove three top mount-to-shock tower nuts and remove strut and spring assembly from vehicle
16.Compress spring with Spring Compressor
17.Place 10mm box-end wrench on top of shock strut shaft and hold while removing top shaft retaining nut with a 21mm 6-point crow foot wrench and ratchet
18.Loosen Spring Compressor , then remove top mount bracket assembly, bearing plate assembly and spring.
INSTALLATION
1.Place a 10mm box-end wrench on top of shock strut shaft and hold while tightening top shaft retaining nut with a 21mm 6-point crow foot wrench and ratchet to 53-72 Nm (40-53 lb-ft).
2.Install strut and spring assembly and three top mount-to-shock tower nuts
3.Install steering knuckle and hub assembly to shock absorber strut.
4.Install a new shock absorber strut-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt. Tighten to 98-132 Nm (73-97 lb-ft).
5.Install halfshaft into hub
6.Install lower arm to steering knuckle ensuring that ball stud groove is properly positioned and boot seal is not damaged. Install a new pinch bolt and nut. Tighten to 53-72 Nm (40-53 lb-ft).
7.Install stabilizer bar link to strut and install a new stabilizer bar link nut. Tighten to 77-103 Nm (57-75 lb-ft).
8.Install tie rod end onto knuckle.
9.Install a new tie rod end slotted nut. Tighten to 31-47Nm (23-34 lb-ft).
10.Install a new slotted nut retaining cotter pin.
11.Install brake rotor
12.Install brake caliper
13.Install tire and wheel assembly
14.Tighten three top mount-to-shock tower nuts to 30-40Nm (23-29 lb-ft).
15.Lower vehicle and tighten hub nut to 230-275 Nm (170-202 lb-ft)
16.Depress brake pedal several times prior to moving vehicle.

Loss of steering


Obviously in both cases some part of the steering linkage broke off (steering shaft, pitman arm, idler arm, tie rod or tie rod end... etc... Could be a number of things, depending on the location of the broken part) In the second case (still had steering for 2 days), that was just a streak of luck and the broken part stayed in place just enough one way or another for a few more days.

Troubles with steering 03 Ford Super Duty Diesel?


Unfortunately this was a concern on this vehicle, even new they had a tendency to wander all over the road and **** around when hitting bumps and ruts in the road. Inspect your tie rods and ball joints to make sure they are tight, inspect the shaft that connects the steering sector to the steering column for free play. If all these are good remove and inspect the steering damper shock if it has one to make sure it is ok, if it doesn't have a steering shock install one. Ford has all the parts available to install one or you can get a kit from Rancho or other suspension parts company. And last off adjust the free play in the steering sector, you will need to set it tighter the factory specs to get the wander out, then have the alignment checked to make sure it is in spec and your truck should drive normally.
