"Check Engine" light on, determined crank sensor needs replacing

I have a 1997 Toyota Rav4, and recently the "check engine" light came on. When I had a local repair shop run a diagnostic check, they came up wiht the recommendation that the crank sensor needed replacing. They tell me that it is positioned in a place very difficult to access, and therefore the charge for replacing this $135 sensor would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $800-900 (since it would require a great deal of time to access). Is this a reasonable repair bill? Is my car in danger of imploding if I don't get the sensor replaced right away?

Thanks for your assistance.

The response I got to "get it fixed" did not answer my question about whether or not the repair estimate is considered a fair one.

    ??????

what does it mean when you say it is "just a sensor?" The car itself is running just fine, no apparent difference in the way it works. What is this sensor for? What is this warning telling me? Is it telling me that something is wrong with the car that definitely needs replacing, or could it just be a defective sensor that needs replacing?

Thank you, that is exactly what I was thinking myself, just needed validation. Appreciate the comments.

Does your car has stored a diagnostic trouble code?
Did they tell you what the specific code diagnosed?
As engine runs fine i dont believe that crank sensor has problem.
Check engine light primary energized by emission control sensors.
To be sure go to an authorized different repair service to hear their opinion.

Crank sensor is just a sensor, but definitely it needs to be replaced since it no longer work the way it should. Nevertheless, it might need reinstalling. Now, if you feel that your car still runs fine, that's ok to drive it everyday. It just a sensor problem though, not the whole machine. I believe the price is too much. Better consult for another mechanic.

Why will engine not start

You have a spark at the plugs, which indicates the ignition system is working.

The engine is cranking over?

If not - or it seems slow to crank - check the earth lead on the battery.

The only other thing that springs to mind is either the crankshaft or camshaft sensor.

MY RAV4 engine stalls while slowing down. Whats the problem do you think?

well lets try inspecting your coolant temp sensor for the ecu, not for your gage it is green whit two wires going into it, if any corrosion replace sensor and pigtail, your ecu may be dumping lots of fuel thinking eng still cold when is hot, this also wahs off your rings and by adding oil bumps compression and starts, hope this helps.

My 1997 Toyota Camry Check engine light is comming in day time and when check engine light is on problem in auto gare shifting but in morning its ok and i chick gair sencer also but nothing happen

Your car stores computer fault codes in the engine/trans modules. They set the CHECK ENGINE light on to alert you a fault is now stored and there is a problem that requires diagnosis. You need to get the fault code scanned to proceed further. There are over 1300 DIFFERENT reasons to turn on the check engine light, some could be minor (a loose gascap), some major (CRANK SENSOR/CAM SENSOR CORRELATION...Car will stall when one finally fails!)
Checking the exact code is the only way to proceed.

2002 Toyota Rav4....check engine light""is

Here are two of the most common causes of the check engine light.

Most common, MAF ( mass air flow ), sensor. A faulty MAF prevents the computer from determining the correct fuel/air mix ratio.

Oxygen sensor. ( front and rear, front meaning before the catalytic converter, rear meaning after the catalitic converter. The front measures the fuel/air mix being sent through the catalitic converter, the back measures the emmisions and lets the computer know if any fuel/air mix ratios need to be adjusted. Both of these can trigger the check engine light.

I hope this helps you.

Hi i want to know if its possible for me to remove and disable the exhaust catalyst (air cleaner) from my toyota rav4 1997 coz i think it is closed and my engine is working hardly especially on a up road....

you don't want to take the cat out because the oxygen sensor will make the check engine light to come on.
the up stream oxygen sensor is called air/ fuel ratio sensor, with out that one your engine will not run right

Maintenence light won't turn off

the check engine is on to alert you to the fact that a failure has occurred in the engine or emission system electronic controls, there are over 200 diff faults that turn this light on, you must have the system tested to get the trouble code that is stored in the memory of the computer whenever the light is turned on..
