Question about 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager
The van had been running smoothly up till then, with no signs whatsoever of any transmission problem. The driver of the flatbed and our mechanic both diagnosed the problem not as a transmission problem, but a problem with the AXLE! Something that connects to or thru the transmission had "snapped/popped/broken", no longer allowing power to be transferred to the wheels........ I'm VERY happy it's a $250 problem vs a $2500 transmission problem, but I worry what could have happened to my young son (on learner's permit), had it happened just a few minutes earlier on the highway!
What I'd LIKE to do is find out more info on exactly what happened & how, and any diagrams, etc explaining the situation - - but I can't seem to find anything on the subject online. Can anyone help explain or direct me to a website that can?
The Front axles on that are CV Joints CONSTANT VELOSITY and if the boot gets a cut in it and no one notices it or just ignores it dirt and debris get in there and ruin those machines bearings (balls) Have you been hearing a clicking or clacking when you turn to one side or the other? If so that was your warning, CV Joints are VERY VERY common to fail not so much like yours did but I'm guessing that it's been goin out for a while.
One other reason CV axles break is the nut that secures then to the hub is loose and it bounces around and eventually breaks I owned Ace Automotive in Lakewood Wa for 14 years andsaw many many CV axles go bad and a few break.
