Question about 1996 Plymouth Grand Voyager

1 Answer

BAM!! With no warning, when pressing the gas pedal at a green light, it felt like our van had been hit from behind, and, just like that, NO gears worked in transmission!!

The van had been running smoothly up till then, with no signs whatsoever of any transmission problem. The driver of the flatbed and our mechanic both diagnosed the problem not as a transmission problem, but a problem with the AXLE! Something that connects to or thru the transmission had "snapped/popped/broken", no longer allowing power to be transferred to the wheels........ I'm VERY happy it's a $250 problem vs a $2500 transmission problem, but I worry what could have happened to my young son (on learner's permit), had it happened just a few minutes earlier on the highway!

What I'd LIKE to do is find out more info on exactly what happened & how, and any diagrams, etc explaining the situation - - but I can't seem to find anything on the subject online. Can anyone help explain or direct me to a website that can?

I didn't realize the topic line was so short! What I said was I had been driving all day with no symptoms. Just left highway a few blocks before & switched to let my son (on a learner's permit) get some local driving in. We had to stop at an intersection for an ambulance to pass by. Next time light turned green, my son pressed the gas pedal, and it felt like we had been hit from behind! BAM!! Then no gears worked & couldn't move OR stop from rolling backwards unless pressed the brake - - handbrake & Park didn't help. Thought we'd lost the transmission, even though no warning, but, as you can see from above, something completely different! Any help or insight into what happened would be greatly appreciated! - - dbs_vz

The Front axles on that are CV Joints CONSTANT VELOSITY and if the boot gets a cut in it and no one notices it or just ignores it dirt and debris get in there and ruin those machines bearings (balls) Have you been hearing a clicking or clacking when you turn to one side or the other? If so that was your warning, CV Joints are VERY VERY common to fail not so much like yours did but I'm guessing that it's been goin out for a while.
One other reason CV axles break is the nut that secures then to the hub is loose and it bounces around and eventually breaks I owned Ace Automotive in Lakewood Wa for 14 years andsaw many many CV axles go bad and a few break.

I have aford transit 2.2deisel camper van the oil has been changed but the warning light is still on can you.help

I assume you mean the oil change light came on and you want to turn it off.

I believe the procedure is to press down on the brake and gas pedal at the same time and turn the key to the on position (DO NOT START) While holding down on the pedals within 20 seconds it should tell you that "Oil change successful".

No speed when gas pedal is to floor tranny light came on

With the oil light coming on and the brake pedal being hard to press I would say that the engine stopped hence no vacuum -no power assist from the booster.- hard brake pedal. The lock uo feeling may come from the engine seizing up while you were still in gear

Slow drag starts, stalling and surging when at a stop

you could have a brake booster issue. you can do a simple test on another car by leaving the engine off and press the brake repeatedly 3 or four times will use up the vacuum in the brake booster. Once you have done this does it feel like the brake pedal in your van?

The D3 code on my 2007 honda odyssey is on what is the problem

Hi!
This is not a code. Instead it is an indication that you are running the van in "overdrive off" mode.

Your van is equiped with a 5 speed automatic transmission. By running in overdrive off you are essentially running in 3rd gear, out of 5 gears. This will cause your van to run at a much higher engine speed, while not going very fast at all and consuming a lot more gas than normal.

You can deactivate this mode by:
1) start the van
2) Press the break pedal
3) Shift to 'D' (drive mode)
4) press the little button that is located on the left side of the shifter, under the shifter button.

If the light does not go out after pressing this button, you may need to take the van to your Honda dealership. Your van should still be under warranty as it is a 2007 model.

Good luck!
