Fuel supply system. Any codes? Stop by your favorite auto parts store "please read my codes" It may or may not suggest a solution. I have found that sensor connections may be corroded. cleaning all the fuel system sensor connections to bright metal on both sides helps without needing sensor replacement. Your syptoms sound like the block temperature sensor that connects to the ecu is giving the ecu "upside down" information. Or no information for the "warm" reading. It could be the corrosion issue or the sensor itself Or some one put the wire end on the sensor upside down.
Check that there are no holes in the float. If the fuel is getting into the float, it will give a false reading. Another thing is to check the ground on the float sensor. If it's not connected tightly, it will create a false reading too.
To confirm if the fault is with the Rheostat float within the fuel tank or the fuel guage in the dashbboard, you can remove the wiring to the fuel tank float. If the guage reading changes- to full- then the guage is good and the fault can be a jammed rheostat which can be removed from the tank and replaced after draining the tank. The guage can be tested on the outside with a ground wiring to the plate of the fittings and as the float is moved the guage must show a change in reading. if not the voltage must be measured to confirm the working of the guage.
Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. You may have a bad sending unit. It could also be a defective dash voltage regulator, lost ground at sending unit, break in the wire at the dash harness too. It can be anyone of these to be honest.
Open circuit - gauge will read full.Grounded circuit - the gauge will read empty. If it reads empty all the time - then the wire that goes to the sender is broken and/or grounded somewhere along its length to the fuel tank. run a jumper wire from bottom of the fuse box in the spot, all the way to top of sending unit on tank. disconnect old wire at both ends, and then turn on the key and observe guage. if not this, check guage itself for sticking.
The float that helps detect fuel level is most likely broken. You or a mechanic will have to remove the fuel pump from the gas tank and check and possibly replace the float. Merry Christmas.
1.If the needle on the guage is stuck. you can try tapping the guage to see if the needle moves or turn the ignition on and off a few times to see if you can get it to move. If the guage drops to empty when you turn off the ignition you know that its not the guage. (note that the guage does not drop to zero when ignition is off with all cars of this age).
2. The problem could be with the sensor in the fuel tank itself. Rocking the vehicle up and down from the rear (you will need help doing this) may free the sensor level indicator ball in the tank.
