Question about 1993 Dodge Shadow

1 Answer

Idles to fast

I recently had a head gasket replaced on my 1993 Dodge shadow , 2.5 L engine. We Thought It was a cracked head but after having the head checked It turned out to be a blown head gasket. It is all back together now but the engine idles to fast. I had spark plugs, rotor and distributor cap replaced with new ones. I am not sure what the problem is. I need some assistance.
Thanks ; Randy Wilbanks : jack@lorettotel.net

If there's white exhaust, oil in your radiator, or your engine oil has a whiteness to it, then yes you have a cracked head.On average a head gasket replacement will take 7 to 9 hours labor plus parts, the average cost of parts to On average a head gasket replacement will take 7 to 9 hours labor plus parts. You can expect to pay around $1000 to $1600 on the job. You can get a whole rebuilt engine with a 3 year warranty, around the same price.

My 2000 dodge caravan engine was run very hot and now i have coolant leaking out of the muffler. dose this mean i have a blown head gasket.i do not have any fluid mixed with the oil. please help....thanks

If you have coolant leaking out of the muffler the head gasket is most likely blown. The head gasket has passageways through it for coolant water, exhaust, intake and engine oil. Depending on which location the gasket has ruptured you can mix fluids or gasses in several combinations. The only way coolant can get to the exhaust is through a cracked head or blown head gasket. If the head is cracked and another head is installed a new head gasket is installed because reusing a used gasket is very risky. The only to be sure what is broken is to take the heads off. If only the head gasket is blown the head is usually warped and should at least be milled if not replaced. I hope this helps.

Water into oil and white smoke... already check thermostat... 1993 lexus es300... can timing belt cause this? or what/

the engine is leaking coolant internally, via either a bad head gasket, cracked cylinder head, or cracked block.

When the car is first started the engine idles

If the throttle plate is closing completely, then this seems to be temperature dependent. Probably the intake manifold gasket. These GM engines were extremely prone to that. When the engine warms up, metal expands, and seals the leak. A good mechanic can check out the usual other culprits: cracked vacuum hoses, bad pcv or egr valve, idle air control motor, etc. Then, maybe a smoke test, when the engine is cold.
There was a giant class action suit on these engines for that problem, but payments ran out 2008. So, use high quality gaskets, (FelPro is excellent) the newly revised torquing procedure, and precoated bolts from GM. Don't use the GM orange coolant. It dissolves the gaskets. Good luck

Dodge shadow 93, antifreeze bubbleing in overflow., white smoke at exhaust.. whats going on?

Sorry for the bad news but you have a blown head gasket and will need to be replaced soon as you can before you end up replacing the whole engine. Antifreeze is corrosive to the engines main bearings and will cause you an engine as long as there is antifreeze mixed with your engine oil.

Engine idles irratic

Did you have the head machined/shaved before you replaced the head gasket with a new one? If not--do over---machine head---replace gasket.

BUT, before you even bother, have you considered the fact that the BLOCK may be cracked? You can check this by looking at each spark (plug for combustion residue of coolant or oil) of each cylinder separately.

check to see if there is any carbon on the throttle body where the butterfly contacts it. also clean the " business end" of the idle air valve to make sure it's not being held open slightly.
