Question about BMW 528

Open Question

BMW 528E speedometer

Speedometer has'nt worked since I've had car. Replaced transmitter, wiring looks good, checked solder joints in instrument cluster, previous repairs had been made, all metered good. I don't have accurate enough prints to check all wiring and meter out. Odometer wont work due to broken gears, but not concerned with that now. Batteries are dead for si board, dont know if that will affect it or not.

probably your batteries being dead is a good start... cheap replacement as long as they haven't leaked onto the SIS board..

I remove two panel underneath the steering column. The first panel is removed using a 10 mm socket. The second panel is removed using a torx socket (can't remember the size). Removing these two panels gives you room to get to the clip on speedomter. Looking at the speedometer, you should see two rectangular holes on each side of the speedometer cover. I use a awl to push in the clip (you could use a screwdriver). Looking underneath the dash, you should be able to see the clip you are pushing on with the awl. I take my 2nd awl and put it behind the clip. I get the left side to release. One the speedometer cover releases, you can see the speedometer. You will see the 4 torx screws (t20) and two smaller clips holding the speedometer. All that is left is the wiring. (I take a sharpie pen and mark one of my wire locations on the speedometer. I am not sure what it does. It is a single wire.)

I did pretty much the same thing that motor1258 did. This was on my third gauge cluster to be in the car. This solution simply does not work. Yeah whacking the top of the dash will sometimes get the gauges to work but not always. I have a bit of a temper and would get pretty annoyed by their non-compliance. I ended up breaking my dash from hitting it too much. So now I had a broken dash on top of my stubborn gauges. I just found a solution online that should be a permanent fix. Basically you take the gauges out, take them apart and re-sodder the pens on each plug back to the circuit board. I am going to try it and hopefully this ends my frustration.

The cluster will have to be sent out for repairs or exchange by a dealer or see Model Electronics.

What relay affects the instrument cluster? My instrument cluster intermittently cuts out for a period of time and then sometimes its back on. More often then not it is not working.

I think I would be investing time in looking for a bad earth(ground) wire for the instrument cluster or dash harness as what you describe is vindictive of a bad connection

I have a 1984 BMW 528e and the radio, brake lights, power windows and speedometer stopped working

Check all your fuses, they come loose and get corroded on these cars often. Give them all a good wiggle to get rid of any oxidation and be sure they aren't blown. If it's not that, check your wiring harnesses.

Yes you are ru=ight about cold solder joints. as you might be handy working on cars youcan try to fix it yourself, But if your not handy with tools andintricate things you best leave this work to those that are. Remove the instrument cluster, leavingthe wiresconnected. turn the key on and push on the electrtrical connecteras you watch the gauges that are/nt working. If the serial bus weren't makig a connection then the check engine light would beon, or is it? Wigh the key off disconnect the electrical connector and the pins that plug in I scrach them by pulling lightly on the with treaded needle nosed pliers slipping off till they are all a little ruoghted up. Reconnect and try again. Sometimes afterhavingthe cluster disconnected ou may needto disconnect the battery sothe ECM will look for the cluster again. This is a common problem but ther's many varaitions of reconnecting including using a true scanner to cycle the gauges in an output test.

The ninstrument panel will intrmitently stop working speedometer, tach and most all gauges the dash is not digital, the wiring connections are not corroded or loose, my 16 year old daughter is driving this...

The solder joints in the instrument panel occationally go bad, you can read about this on The only semi-permanent solution is to re-flow the solder joints on the cluster, or swap it for a newer model.

Speedo dont work on audi 200 89

It's one of three things. The sensor in the transmission is bad. The wiring from the sensor to the speedometer is bad. Or the speedometer itself is bad.
