- Drain the oil
- Remove the oil pan. You may have to lift or tilt the engine or remove frame members of the vehicle to do this, so it's probably the hardest part. Clean the gasket and seal surfaces on the engine block and crankshaft end bearings. Clean the oil pan. While you have the bottom of the engine open, inspect the cylinders for score marks and check for other anomalies such as sloppy piston bushings on the crank.
- Remove the oil inlet screen housing if it blocks access to the oil pump mounting bolts.
- Remove the oil pump. Clean the gasket/O-ring surface where it meets the engine block.
- Pour some clean oil into the outlet of the new oil pump (not so full you spill it when you install it). This will help it get oil into the engine more quickly on its first startup.
- Be sure you have the outlet gasket or O-ring in place!
- Install the new pump
- Clean or replace the filter screen assembly. Replace its O-ring and install on the oil pump.
- Reassemble the rest of the vehicle, using new gaskets and seals on the oil drain pan.
- Fill the new oil filter about 1/2 full of oil and install (always do this - it reduces the time the engine is turning dry after an oil change). This does not apply to vehicles that have open-face filters mounted in the bottom of the oil pan such as the 1980's Buick four-cylinder models.
- Add the rest of the oil in the usual manner.
