Tap on it a little see if needle drop back to zero, if engine not running more likely gauge broken.

I replaced the radio with an aftermarket one and now my dash lights, power windows and my headllights have dont come on automataclly like they did before. my alarm on my remote dont work either, I think i did something to the alarm system, that is why they are not working.

2000 odyssey speedometer needle stuck past 140mph

I also had the same problem. After calling around to get quotes in the $100+ for junkyard clusters I decided to tear the thing apart to see what was up. Once apart I noticed the speedo and tach needles are weighted to drop the needle to 6 o'clock. All I had to do was spin the speedo needle back to the rest and all was well. I'm guessing when we reset the trip odometer there must have been a short in the board that pulsed the speedo and caused it to spin beyond return. I tested the trip buttons a few times and no short yet. please give me a good rating :) i only need one more! thanks a bunch!

I have a 2002 Oldsmobile Alero. I left it sitting in the cold for 2 days and when I tried to start it the battery was dead. Took the battery to get recharged and now the car starts, but the speedometer...

Hello Aubrey.

I have seen this happen before. Caused by a voltage surge mostly by hooking up the battery with the key on.

When you get your car up to a speed on the highway that is halfway on your speedometer it will come back around. You may need to get up to 70 or 80 MPH.

Watch you don't get a ticket!

Thank you for using FixYa.

Have 99 alero heating up seems to be blowing all the cooling out the overfol on the surge tank can anyone help me

You may have a thermostat that is stuck closed. I would also check the radiator cap. Worse thing would be a blown head gasket.

Please Help. 99 Alero speedometer needle is stuck at 140mph. Did just happened out of nowhere. Can anyone give me suggestions on what to do.

Hi, this problem is present in many Intrigue's and Alero's, happens when you turn on the ignition and the motor starts turning, if the car doesn't start right up, the neddles to the temp and gas gage and the speedometer go crazy, most of the time when you turn the key off, they go back to the normal positions, but some time they get stuck.

It has happend to my 98 Intrigue 4 or 5 times, and what I do is take the Instrument panel off and manualy reset the needles.

It may sound complicated but it is not, it takes me about 15 min. to reset mine.

I can explain to you step by step how to remove the Instrument Panel, but you'll be better off getting the Haynes Repair Manual for your Alero, you'll find clear and simple instruccions and pictures to help thru. Besides, I can almost guarantee that it will happen again.

Good Luck

Try giving it a good rap on dash above speedo, see what happens, and get back to me, it may have same problem as my old 95' neon did.
