My 1993 ranger revs up between shifts. Sitting still it idles fine. You can rev the motor while sitting still and it idles back down as it is supposed to. But when I am going through the gears on the road it revs up real high and will not quit unless I slow to nearly a complete stop. I am on disability and could really use some advice on how to remedy this problem so I could possibly fix it myself. Thank you very much.

I have a 1990 Ford Ranger 2.3 very high miles. Vehicle runs, starts and idles well. Does not visibly burn oil. Check engine light comes on at around 65 miles an hour after vehicle is warm. If you slow down...

Best guess with the information provided is restricted flow of the catalytic convertors. At higher speed the rpm's stay consistant. If the cats are not allowing the exhuast to push thru unrestricted the engine will know its labored but not why.

do this...

make sure the reservoir is full
engine off and pump the clutch pedal slowly about 5-10 times
while holding the pedal down have assistant open the bleeder on the master located in the trans

if you get a good squirt then your concern is the master
if no squirt then replace the slave

neither job is quick but the slave is 1/2 time

I would first begin with a good tune up with new plugs wires cap, rotor, check coil. injector can be clog also, try to add bottle of fuel injectors cleaner and add 93 octane of gas fill it half way and run it til empty and see that will also help. If you have high miles like over 100k have timing check, its good idea to change timing belt every 75-10k miles, if it jump time due to worn belt, the car will not run properly.

Put new belt on and try to start, If runs rough afterward run compression test to determine which cylinders have bent valves.

If the truck has been sitting, I would be looking into the bell housing for mouse nest. Chipmunks and mice love to make nests in there. Nut shells and other debris will interfer when clutch pedal is depressed. All that **** falls in between the pressure plate and slave cylinder. It's hard to clean out without removing transmission. Good Luck
