You probably have a bad light socket that the bulb plugs into. If this is not the problem, you will have to trace the circuit from the light switch to the bulb. It could be the Check Control Module (The electronic box that is designed to monitor your light circuits and tell youthat you have a light out by iluminating the Lamp-Out Warning Lamp on the dash.) I have seen several of these things go out. Imagine that...the system that is designed to monitor the system and warn of system failure is causing the system to fail. Only in today's "too much technology" world.
partially remove the desired light by remove the 4 8mm screws, two ont the top and two at bottom behing the light, pull the light out far enough that you can see the socket, you should be able to remove it at that point. You should also check the contact of the bulb as it is most likely burned or melting and has damaged the socket so you should replace he socket and bulb as the warning may still be present even though the bulb works. Also the rear tail lights have a corrosion and burning issue as well on the brake contacts.
DO YOU WANT TO REPLACE THE BULBS IF SO THE BULBS ARE REMOVED FROM UNDER THE HOOD THRU THE REAR OF THE LIGHT
IF YOU ARE TRYING TO REMOVE THE WHOLE LIGHT ASSEMBLY THERE IS A LOT INVOLVED THE GRILL HAS TO BE REMOVED TO GET TO SOME OF THE SCREWSBUT I'LL WARN YOU IT IS NOT AN EASY JOB AND PARTS CAN GET BROKEN IF YOU ARE NOT CAREFUL
There is an issue with the rear tail lamp bulb holders. BMW knows about this problem and released an updated part. Basically the bulb is not held tight enough, and occasinally loses contact with the holder. Your car should still be under warranty and any local BMW dealer should have the parts in stock.
Hi, have you checked to see if the eye level brake light is working, other than that check the wiring harness for the boot/tail gate within the rubber corrugated trunking on the right hand side near the boot hinge as it is quite common for the wires to break wear they always flex and check the multiplug on the back of the rear light unit as the earth terminal may have burned out, hope this helps, regards mark.
If the brake light works, disconnect battery negative with ignition key ON and Radio ON, but engine OFF, four minutes after connect Battery terminal, do not panic if terminal sparks wile connecting, *** it well turn ignition key OFF, than start the motor and verify if problem remains
