The manual mention that this sign like a yellow gear is a transmition malfuntion. If your transmition doesn't work or you notice that your car loose power, for sure is a transmition problem. But, if your transmition is working good then could be Auxiliary Air Flow Valve. I sugget you to diagnose you car's systems with an BMW scanner, it will give you the real errors and codes. Good Look

Try checking youre abs sensors on all for wheels.clean them up with wd-40 or similer. they get a bit dirty & can cause dramas.

OR on the rhf brake calliper & lhr brake calliper there is a sensor for brake pad wear indicators. either your pads are low or the little copper 'U' clip has fallen out. check them and see how you get on.

WHy the vehicle does not start when pushing the start button and the dashboard does not light on?

A 1997 BMW 328 (E36) does not have a start/stop button. The start/stop button didn't get added until after the year 2009.

If you mean it doesn't start when you turn the key, and no dash lights come on, you may either have a bad ignition switch or a dead battery.

Sun roof wont close

theres a way to close it by taking off the panel above that covers the motor and putting a allen wrench into the middle of the motor unit and turning it i think clockwise. If the gears are stripped it wont work...but if its just the motor then manually turning the gear should close it. I figured out which way it needed to be turned to close then put a allen attachment on my cordless drill and made it easier cause it will take awhile

1997 BMW 328i Convertable Top wont go up or down Replaced atomatic locking fex rods at windshield locking device . what next should I check

Check the electric motors at that are located underneath the fabric in the trunk of the car. One is behind the left tail light the other underneath the roof hold.

First open them up if the gears are exposed it means that they are not engaged. To re engage simply push them back into place.

Before re engaging manually bring up the roof and then press the roof sequence button.

To make sure that the roof electric motors are functioning before re engaging let someone press the button and check that the gears move, While disengaged they will only move for about 5 to 10 seconds.

1997 328 i convertable the engine lite just went on just bought

When the "Check Engine" light comes on in the 1997 BMW 328iC, the problem is 99% Emissions Systems. First thing to check are the Four (4) Oxygen Sensors. That is correct your convertible has four O2 sensors. They are about $100 to $118 each, online.

I have done this procedure it is not a big deal. It just requires four sensors. More than likely you and your car experience one or several of the following:
  • Engine will not accelerate and backfires
  • Check Engine light is illuminated
  • Irregular idle during warm-up
  • Irregular idle with warm engine
  • Poor engine performance
  • Fuel consumption is high
  • Driving performance is weak
The O2 sensors reduce emissions and tells the computer how to mix your gasoline to air mixture going into your engine.

Since you say you have a 328, they have either two or four O2 sensors. The 1997 BMW 328 Convertible has four. Your chassis style is also referred to as a E36 series. Your engine is a 6 cyl M52.

Good luck

Some possibilities:
- Ultraviolet damage from the sun (many synthetics will last forever if not exposed to UV)
- Cigarette smoke. - Hair spray.
Look for a shop that does auto reupholstery; they should have the necessary means to replace the disintegrating stitching.

Compression settings

Hi,
Without the user manual, i have no idea.
If your burning oil, it,s either Piston-Ring Or Valve-gear wear.
I,d only test commpression, if a huge power loss is evident.

Regards Mike.
