The cruise control on my 1998 Jeep Cherokee works on and off. It may work for 200 miles or only two miles. If it is working, it will set and work just fine. Then you use the cancel button and it may or may not come back on. Sometimes it will just shut off all by itself as if you hit the brakes or the cancel button. And it may not work for two or three days then all of a sudden is working again.

Sometimes it will also surge when you set it and increase 5-10 mph, then settle back down to the mph you just set it too.

    Sure has me puzzled!!!

Check for a brake switch that may be adjusted to tight, a faulty transducer, or faulty cruise control module.

it is hard to know without scanning for codes, do you have a way to scan? If not parts stores usually do it for free.

2003 jeep grand cherokee cruise control not working.

Ok, the '03 Jeep Grand Cherokee uses a small vacuum line to control the servos. Since your light comes on, it's obviously getting power. 9 out of 10 times it's the vacuum hose.
Pop the hood and look on the passenger side towards the back for the engine coolant reservoir. It's most likely underneath it so you may have to remove the res. Check the vacuum hose and all vac. connections then check the electrical connections. If that's not the problem, check the cruise control connection to the throttle linkage.
If that still doesn't do it, you may need use scan tools and diagnostic procedures that are out of the scope of home mechanics.
Wish ya luck!

1998 jeep Cherokee cruise control does not work. how can it be fixed?

Check your vacuum hose routing to the cruise control servo, it's a hard plastic hose and sometimes breaks. Does your vents work properly? An indication that you have a vacuum leak.

The clockspring behind the steering wheel is possibly defective or unplugged. It is the one and only component that all of your symptoms have in common.

i recommend cleaning the throttle plates. they are located unter the intake hose form the engine to the air filter housing. if you open them with the engine not runniong you will see they will be covered in carbon. use a good carb cleaner and a rag to wipe them clean
