Question about 1987 Toyota Camry

1 Answer

Running Problems I have an 87 camry with the 2.0L auto with ECT. The problem is: I start my car in the morning and drive maybe 5 mins to wherever then on the way home it coughs about 2 times then shuts off/dies. I try starting it and it turns over. I then let it sit for a few mins. then it starts and then I drive it home. I have replaced the fuel pump, strainer, and fuel filter, cleaned the MAP and MAF sensors, checked the fuses all seem good. Also when it dies it sometimes acts like the starter went out, it makes no clicks or sounds. I can hear the fuel pump running when I turn the key but nothing happens. Then I wait for a few mins. then it fires up. Then later it does it again. Pleeeeeeeez help.

I had this problem for years when my 87 was only a few years old. Even though it was tested over and over, the distributor ended up being the problem. I got lucky when a friend saw it posted in a tom and ray column in their local newspaper. It was for a corolla, but same year. I told my mechanic to replace it. He said I didn't need one, I insisted he replace it anyway and I've NEVER had the problem again.
Hope it fixes yours.

After driving car for one houe, making two stops, shutting off engine and starting it up again (no problems), returning home, parking car and shutting off engine. Went back to start car less than 5 min....

You say it started up no problems? Then it wouldn't start? What did it do when it wouldn't start? Did it turn over, did it do nothing/something?
From just what little info I have I tend to think it's a starter. It starts fine when it's cold but after the engine heats the starter to engine operating temperature the starter maybe starts to drag? not allowing it spin the engine fast enough to start it???
This is only a guess with the limited info. Hope this helped thanks, HAVE A SAFE AND PRODUCTIVE DAY!

dont think it is a fuel issure sounds like a MASS AIR PROBLEM if a car is stalling while driving and will not starts but cranks its one of two things a fuel prob. or an air problem i would first check your idle air valve as well *** your tps sensor if this is happening while you drive the vehicle it sounds like at some point there is either too much air or fuel in chambes causeing missfire inturn shutting down the engine reason for not starting again is simple if its too much fiel its flooded and if it's not enough air your engine cant start if it starts after 3 hours sounds like enough time for all fumes to have subsided in chamber and again allowing for a clean start up check tps and idle air valve as well as mass air flow

87 Camry won't restart until 5 min later, but will turn over.

There is a little diode in your distributor that gets tired, and that's exactly what they act like. Either change it, or go to an auto wrecker and get a whole distributer. That's sometimes cheaper than buying electical parts.
