Your car is OBD I. The plug is under the hood near the shock tower. On some of the Ford products, the plug is on the driver's side and on some are located on the pass. side. It should have a rectangular plug that says "test" on it.

This happened to my Avenger too. The issue for me, was, my spark plugs were loose or bad. The plugs were replaced and it ran like the issue never happened. It happened just as you say though, I had gotten gas and that's when it started. I hope it's as simple for you as it was for me!
Working backward, make sure everything is hooked up correctly ; coils, injectors, vac lines, etc... If everything looks good, you can go to your local Checker, Autozone or O'Rieleys and have them do code pull for you to help isolate fault.

It needs transmission work. Just because you cant feel it, doesnt mean its not there, the trans computer compares shaft speeds and knows theres a problem. If you keep driving it, it will get worse and leave you waliking.
Take it to any Auto Zone, Checker, or similar auto parts store, they will have the right adapter for your car and do it for free. Some auto shops will also do this for free. It will be a plug under driver side dash that you hook the computer up to.
The "Check Engine" light, if that's what you're referring to, should only illuminate if the ECU detects an engine or trans problem. When you first turn the key on, the light will illuminate, because the ECU runs a preliminary test on its systems. It should then go out . If the light stays on, then you'll have to get the system scanned for diagnostics codes. Hope this helps.
