Use any decent oil filter wrench. I like the strap ones best. Turn the filter counter clockwise (when you are looking at the bottom of the filter) Same direction as unscrewing a bottle cap etc.

Righty tighty lefty loosey .. if it will not turn, then you can use a screwdriver and drive it through and turn it with the screwdriver, just make sure once it off, that the little rubber black gasket is off, as if you do not and put the new one on it is going to throw oil everywhere. Good Luck Tim

These work the same as a normal screw or bolt -- if you are looking at it from the top (the furthest point from where it connects to the car) turning it counter-clockwise should loosen it. Oil filters tend to get a bit stuck ... but turning it to the left (counter clockwise) should do the trick. If you are still unable to budge it, try getting an oil-filter wrench from a local auto parts store. It should not pose too much of a problem with a wrench. Remember not to use the wrench to tighten the new one onto the car -- hand tightening should be good enough to keep it in place and sealed (and don't forget to put a little bit of oil on the seal on the new filter when you put it on -- this is called "lubricating the seal" ... and it should help prevent this much trouble in the future).

Oil filter location

The oil filter is on the back side if the engine block under the intake manifold. You have to go between the fire wall and engine, it is tight in there. To get at it from the top of the engine bay I have to un-bolt and move the cruise control actuator and vacuum canister from around the passenger side shock tower & fire wall area. It helps to have a cap type oil filter wrench (65mm/14 flutes) with sockets and extensions. .
