Accurate diagrams are tough to find online ... the easiest place to find the right ones would be in a Haynes manual (available at most auto-parts stores). This will give you the accurate diagrams, and directions (with pictures and precautions, and common problem solutions) for your make and model of car. The manual is written based on a complete tear down and rebuild of the car .. and will help with any future car repairs that you will need to do. I have not been without one for any car I have owned in more than 10 years -- they really are THAT good -- and for around $20 US, it will probably save you thousands of dollars in repair costs over the life of your car.
I have tried finding diagrams online, but they are often listed under the wrong model, year or engine size ... so finding the one that actually applies to your car is a hassle -- and even if you find the right one, it's tough to reference a computer when you are working on your car. I assure you that you will have an easier time if you get the Haynes manual.

2001 ford escape serpentine belt diagram

Below are 2 diagrams for you because the Escape came with 2 different engines for this year. The first diagram is for the 2.0 liter engine and the second picture is for the 3.0 litler engine. Now as far as an adjustment, there really isn't one. If there isn't enough tension and you are sure the belt is good and the correct size but still seems to be to loose, then you will need to replace the tensioner. I hope this helps.....

Alternator belt

Under the hood, on the radiator support or on the underside of the hood you'll find a black label with a white belt routing diagram. In order to replace the belt you must back off the tensioning pulley using a ratchet handle with a 3/8" drive spindle. The pulley often has a square slot into which the ratchet handle will fit. If your tensioner does not have this then it will be necessary to provide the correct size socket to fit the center hold-down bolt on the tensioner. The tensioner will only move easily in ONE direction with the tool. Just back the tensioner off enough until you are able to remove the belt from one of the upper pulleys(usually the alternator). Take extra care when relieving the tensioner after removing the belt. The spring is very strong. Before installing the new belt, make sure and turn by hand ALL of the pulleys to check for a seized bearing or a worn bearing. This is generally why the belt came off to begin with. All pulleys should turn smoothely and quietly. Thank you, Dana
