Question about 1994 Honda Accord

2 Answers

My 1994 Honda Accord vtec suddenly sounds like a souped up muscle car. This started about 4 weeks ago. She used to be so quiet I could hardly tell the engine was running. I have 284,000 miles on her but have done all of the required maintenance. My mechanic has checked out the exhaust system twice but thinks it's in the engine. He mentioned rocker arm and something else (sorry, panicked and can't remember). DON'T like car payments and like the car I have now. What do you think and better to buy or fix?

Can't diagnose a noise online but I do suggest you get another opinion before doing anything else. if it is an exhaust noise it could be a bad manifold or manifold gasket. Could also be that the muffler internally has a few baffles that fell apart. You really do need another hands on objective opinion though.
    Good luck!!

Well that would depend. to fix the problem, i really cant see you spending over 500, 1000 if the situation is that bad. you can probably get at least another 100,000 miles out of it at least since you maintain it right. . if you would like to upgrade to maybe a newer car, like above 2000 then buy. but if you really like your car, then you can have the engine completely rebuild for around 1500, depending on the area, and the engine would be like new, but theirs also a risk of other components going bad like the distributor(shouldn't be a problem if you change the cap and rotor), or the fuel pump(no problem if you change the fuel filter), maybe alternator since theres not really any preventative maintenance. but once again, you do your maintenance, any other components going bad is really unlikely. so i say the cheapest would be to fix the existing problem(i think id do that), the second cheapest would be to rebuild the engine, and the most expensive would be to buy another car(this can be risky because not everyone takes care of their cars the same). hope this helps. goodluck.

Thank you. She has a few dents and I've put a lot into her already (timing belt, radiator, hoses, fuel pump, engine fan, etc.) Running average of 100-120 a month. It may be time to say goodbye! My mechanic said I could have up to 50,000 miles left ( city and I do 10-12 K a year) and we can duct tape thru that. I just may drive her until the wheels fall off while doing poverty to save some money for another used Accord. P.S. I will get an estimate to fix and maybe a second mechanic's opinion. Dropping the new/newer engine in is a poss also.

well if you buy a 04-07 accord, im pretty sure youll grow fond of it really quickly too. and you can get any accord because those years, all have vtec, it would just be a difference of 4 or 6 cylinders.

Well one easy answer for you. The VTEC enige is unbreakable and will rev higher than you think. When the VTEC kicks in you will get a bit more noise as the enige sucks more air but believe me as long as you keep ontop maintenance wise it will be the best buy.

Determining if head gasket is blown on a 1994 honda accord Ex w VTec

White smoke out of the exhaust is one indication that the head gasket is blown. Another is to start the car and check the oil on the dipstick. If it's frothy or looks like a milkshake, this is another indication of a blown head gasket. The milky appearance indicates that coolant is in your engine, caused by a bad head gasket. If none of these symptoms occur, then the problem lies elsewhere. Hope this answers your question and feel free to post back with any other concerns or questions. Thank you.

Vtec 2.2L misfires

misfires wont always trigger a OBDI code but take your injector out and have it bench tested at local parts store or repair center assuming you have spark in that cylinder, cheaper usually but if it needs replacement heres some great places to get cheap replacement
