To save yourself from being ripped off this is what I did.drop trans pan....replace control sol@40.00..AZ-76921.replace shift interlock sol.@50.00 AZ-924-733...install new filterAZ-tf-403 /with gasker 14 bolt hole..you won't need to replace all the fluid[13.9 qts..need about 8qts.40.00...I did not no for sure what sol. needed but for the price of fluid and the low cost of parts it is best to replace both tot. about 160.00 shifts great, took my time and was a 2 hr. job.hope this is your sure cure.

Check the fluid if it is not red and looks dark and smells burnt then an overhaul or replacement is needed, it is possible for transmission specialists to fix shift problems sometimes, but if the fluid is burnt then it is at most a temporary solution.

97 town car not shifting from 1st to 2nd gear

Check the Coolant (antifreeze) level. My 94 continental has a hard time shifting from 2nd to 3rd when the level is low. Also, this may indicate that the transmission fluid is too old to work properly. The transmission fluid is cooled at the bottom of the radiator, since cool fluid works better than hot fluid (especially when the trans fluid is old) that could make the transmission not shift properly. Keep the coolant level up until you can have the trans fluid checked.

You are going to need a transmission shop. Mazdas do not always throw codes. You have an early OBD transmission, which do not send out many codes.

Automatic Transmission shifts late and rough after warm

If it has over 60000 miles it may need a transmission service, which includes a filter and fluid change, fluid may look fine but if filter is clogged and not picking up fluid fast enough when u give it gas the pump spins faster and forces fluid thru to shift, more fluid is needed to shift into higher gear.than to drive

93 LincolnTown Car will not shift above 2nd.

Have you tried taking the car in for maintenance? Usually on most (older) auto transmissions there is a hose coming off of the exhaust manifold or carburetor area that provides the pressure for the transmission fluid. If that hose doesn't have a good seal, your shifting may be difficult and the transmission may not stay in the gear you want it to.
