Trying to find voltage regulator for a 1990 dodge 150.its not on the fire wall

If the regulator is not integral inside the alternator then it is part of the engine control computer.
(I know....intelligent design). There is a "work around" by installing a regulator to the field wiring and bypassing the computer but it turns the check engine light on and therefore in many states it won't pass inspection that way.

The voltage reg on some Dodge is in the alternator and in the ECM on others. here is a copy of another post from a Dodge truck forum that may help you.

**The voltage regulator is built-in to the ECM...about a $275 part! However, before you jump to conclusions about the voltage regulator being defective, I'd highly recommend that you go visit the autozone website and follow the "Check charging system" word for word. I discovered that the alternator in my 1990 Dodge van wasn't grounding? How could that be? It's bolted to a metal bracket, right? Could be corrosion, could be rust? I even installed a second ground strap from engine to body. Nothing worked until I ran a ground wire from the battery to the alternator case. Charged just great then! Of course I discovered this after first replacing the alternator and the ECM! Don't you make the same (expensive) mistake.

How do you change the computer on a 1990 dodge dakota?

the 1990 dodge Dakota came with two different charging and two different fuel delivered systems. If it had it a Bosch alternator the voltage regulator is built into it. Denso type with external voltage regulator with the voltage regulator is on the fire wall of the truck and may be the problem . Some part stores list the alternator for the for the external regulator don't list the Bosch internal regulator alternator at all for what ever the reason. And if they do the Bosch replacement will be higher in price (I found Nappa online store to have a better listing than some other parts listing) so back to your question replacing the CPU disconnect the Battery on the right side of truck just in frount of finder well you will see a black module with a air intake hose running to it this is the SUCB (single unit control board) remove the wiring plug by unscrewing the center screw and pull it free unscrew the 4 mounting screws and you are discounted this unit is sealed and will need to be replaced if replaced with one from a salvage yard make sure it is the same carbureted and fuel injection are different also 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel are different

I got a 89 dodge d 150 v6 no fire at the coil can run a hot wire to the coil and it runs what does this regulator look like and where is it located

Try this jumper the ballast resistor on the fire wall if you have one looks like a block of white ceramic wit two or four wires. Jump them across not up and down If you check voltage on the right side 12 volt left side lower to protect coil from 12 volts. If that doesn't work your shut down relay may be bad. If not getting voltage to resister could be the starter switch on top of steering column under dash. Key switch is not ignition switch. The key switch pulls a lever up on the ignition switch if switch is not set right it will not send power to the coil. I had two break before on me. The book says to follow the wire all the way back to the battery and look for breaks

My 1987 dodge w 150 wont hold a charge ive changed the alernator battery as well as the voltage regulator. when i charge the battery it holds a charge for about 5 to 6 starts

Could be a short. Have you checked the voltage at the battery with the car running? Is it over 14 volts?

Please see my tip at http://www.fixya.com/cars/r5925550-dead_battery_troubleshooting . These are generic instructions. If you get stuck or need specific instructions for your car, please get back to me with model, year and engine info.

You need to replace the external voltage regulator on the fire wall. Probably need a new pig tail wiring harness too.

My 1990 dodge truck is not charging. I have power on both sides of the internal voltage reg. But one of the leads coming out of the black box on the top of the alternater is not getting power back to gauge...

Very good, you pinpointed where the problem is. Try to replace the voltage regulator or the whole alternator with a new voltage regulator included.

This will fix your problem.
