Question about 1996 Mazda MX-5 Miata

1 Answer

Not too long ago, my Mazda miata 1996 started to turn off randomly. I didn't think anything of it until one night it turned off on me while i was driving home. The other times, i was just letting it warm up and it just happened to die. So i took it to a mechanic and he looked at it and said i need a crank shaft sensor system. On top of that, he said i should be hesitant to take long trips because my car might die on me and then i would have to have m car towed, which would be pretty expensive. This mechanic told me this parts is pretty expensive ($400 expensive), however i have been browsing on the web and noticed that there are some auto sites advertising "crank shaft position sensor" for mazda miata's for around $72. Has anyone had this problem before, and what would you suggest? Thanks, i would really appreciate the advice.

The price he listed you could have also included the labor charge, I would check around with other shops as well as the dealership but also be warned that not all parts sold online are quality parts specially if they are coming out of china.

My miata shakes at 40 mph

Although you didn't say if it feels like the shaking is coming from a wheel, it sounds to me like you have a bad tire even though they are new. Take it back to where you got the tires and have them take a look. If they can't see anything, ask them to take it for spin.

Severe misfiring

one thing you can try is starting it when cold and while it is skipping..shut it off and remove the spark plugs and see if they are wet with antifreeze,i have seen this on a few vehicles and is a hard problem to catch,if there is antifreeze on the plug u might have a small internal head gasket leak, hope this helps

'02 Miata stalls randomly

your crank position sensor is starting to go bad. we see this a lot at the shop, when it gets hot it will short itself out. you will need to replace it before it goes out all the way. it is located on the front of the valve cover or on the pass side rear of the cover and is held it by one bolt. you can get this at your local parts house but I do recommend you use the one from the dealer we seem to have less problems with them.
