There are many things that can cause your engine to overheat. It could be caused by a bad thermostat, a faulty fan clutch, a defective electric fan motor (if your vehicle is equipped with one), torn/broken hoses, or a bad water pump. It could also be something much more serious like a blown head gasket, intake manifold gasket, or a cracked cylinder head or engine block. It could also be something as simple and easy as an inaccurate temperature sending unit making you "think" the engine is overheating when it actually is not.
In any event, proper diagnostics need to be performed immediately. An overheating engine is nothing to mess around with unless you are very wealthy and can afford to replace an entire engine.

What Else Could Be Wrong?
1. Bad water pump
2. Bad thermostat
3. Bad overflow/ radiator cap
4. Coolant system needs cleaning.
There are so many things it could be but getting them narrowed down is the problem.
Have you checked for leaks? The proper way is to pressure test the coolant system with a pressure tester, if you don't have access to one I think they can be rented at the parts stores for free. you should also test or replace the radiator cap, test for head gasket leaks, properly operating coolant fan clutch, proper belt tension and a clogged radiator.

SOURCE: where are the spark plugs located on a 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis
There are eight COPs (coil-on-plugs) to remove. Using a 7mm or 9/32" socket, remove each bolt securing each COP to the intake manifold on top of the engine. Remove all eight COPs, and the spark plugs are underneath. When replacing the spark plugs, use only the proper Ford/Motorcraft plugs, even if they cost twice as much as the aftermarket ones. You will avoid further headaches this way. Hope this helps.

I would need more info on cars performance and other facts prior to over heating. When any car over heats there is several things that can cause a car to over heat, some are very minor and easy to fix and low cost to fix. Some are more difficult and can get costly. Here is just a short list of minor to major of things that can cause a car to over heat.
Radiator fluid is low or not proper ration of mix.
Radiator fan is not coming on, can be broken belt, or fuse/switch not working.
Thermostat not working on stuck.
Clogged hose that circulates through radiator fluid system.
Blown head gasket, which is more difficult and More costly to repair, and if head is cracked in most case if blown head gasket, head has to be taken to a machine shop and have it machined.
You can test some of this list yourself by first starting at the top of my list with the easiest items and checking those first. Feel free to write me back after process of elimination , and I will tell you how to fix it once area of problem is located. Thanks mike
