Question about 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan

1 Answer

The rear brake pads on my 2008 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT wore out in 5,000 miles. Clearly they are hanging up. Is there something that I should check first? Can I adjust the park brake? Replace the caliper?

You don't need to change the caliper, you need to adjust the brakes and the replace the brake pads..

Parking brake should be unaffected if you only changed the rear disc pads. The parking brake self adjusts every time you back up and apply the brakes if it is functioning properly.

How to change rear brake pads in 2008 dodge caravan?

In this tutorial, we learn how to check the brake pads on a 2008 Dodge Caravan, check the thickness of the brake pads on the car to see if they are thick enough. The rear pad is surrounded by a gold piece called the "shoe" and the rotor. The front pad has to be inspected by laying on your back and looking for the pad to see how thick it is. How to remove front rotors on 2008 dodge grand caravan sxt 3.8l

You will need a big C clamp and a 21 mm socket. Remove the wheel. Use the C clamp to compress the front brake piston: Just put the screw side of the c clamp on the outside brake pad and the frame part of the c clamp on the back of the caliper and turn the c clamp in until it won't compress further. You don't have to over-do it. Don't force it and don't do this with the back brakes...they require a tool that rotates the piston as it compresses... Hint: rent it from auto zone for free.
Once the piston is compressed, use the 21mm socket to remove the two caliper bolts and then tie up the caliper so it doesn't hang down in the way and stress the brake lines.
Then you need to bang on the rotor with a mallet until you free it and it will come off. You may need to hammer it pretty hard.
That's it.
Assemble in reverse.

How do you get the caliper in on the rear of 2008 dodge caravan

You need to compress the caliper piston back into the caliper assembly to allow the new pads to fit over the rotor. A C clamp can be used to compress the caliper piston. Be sure to remove the brake reservoir cap before compressing the piston and remove excess fluid from the reservoir to prevent over filling.

2008 sxt 3.3 engine...front left brake not releasing..heats up excessively..have done the usual, compressing, cleaning, silicone lubing raceways etc. to no avail... must carry a tool with me to manually...

That problem is generally caused by an internal failure of the rubber brake hose between the body and caliper. Remove the hose and replace it. If the rotor has been overheated you may also want to replace both the rotor and brake pads.
