possibly a Passlock issue. Passlock is the anti-theft system.
This system allows starter operation, then kills the injectors 1-2 seconds after startup. This is a ?Hall-Effect? system. The key cylinder housing has a small magnet that rotates past the Passlock sensor. The sensor is powered and detects the rotation. The voltage on the sensor then drops to a specified value (there are 10 different values). There?s no pellet in the key. So basically this system is checking to see that a thief has not popped the lock cylinder to steal the vehicle. you have to perform a Powertrain Control Module (PCM) relearn procedure (need a programming scan tool)

A number of different GM vehicles have the passlock. And there are a number of problems that go with it. I have looked tirelessly for answers and this is what I have found.
1. turn the key to ACC and leave it on for 10 minutes. then switch back to off, pull the key out and put it back in to start the vehicle. this resets the passlock.
2. If the left turn signal usage makes a buzz, and right turn signal kills the engine, you need a new turn signal switch.
3. If the ignition will not let you pull the key out or any other issue with the ignition, you need a new ignition switch and matching key.
4. there is a way to bypass the passlock through hard wiring around the solenoid. this however is very tricky and can be found on most grand am forums.
5. Sometimes when you are having security/ignition/any problem at all... You need to "flash" your vehicles BCM or PCM.
6. The passlock system should be recalled entirely and never should have been put there in the first place. hope that helps!

What would be the problem if my 1998 buick regal supercharge starts but dies

Sounds like a weak fuel pump or clogged fuel filter.Check your fuel pressure it should be 48-55 psi with the key on and engine off.

I have a 99 regal 3.8 supercharged car starts then dies. it loosing power to the fuel pump. have replaced fuel pump and ignition switch because i thought there was a prob with security system.i am realy...

It does sound like you have a passkey (security) issue. If the BCM does not recognize the key cylinder code the BCM will send a comand to the PCM to shut down the fuel system.
When you say you replace the "ignition switch", was it the switch or the tumbler.
If the tumbler was replaced you will have to relearn the key code.
Let me know if the key tumbler was replaced and I will tell you how to relearn the key code.

Buick Regal dying

You have a problem in the fuel pump relay circuit for sure then. I'm betting the relay, but it could be that dropping resistor.

Will start then dies

On the regals they have a ceramic resistor on the passanger side under the fender. It heats up and over time it tends to brake and the wire inside tends to rust away. The fuel pumps run in 2 different speeds. Had the same problem. Dealer only part yet the car would run and you would think it was the fuel pump. Turn the key it kicks on then start and dies out. Ceramic on the pass side would need replaced. It is white about 2-3 inches long or so held on with 2 bolts i do believe. Ill find a bulliten i found online to help me diagnos the problem. :) hopefully this helps someone out instead of spendin $$$ that ya cant afford with the recession eh?

I have a 1998 buick regal it will start but won't stay running for longer than 2secs

If your 1998 Buick Regal is the GS model (supercharged), there is a resistor that is either switched into the circuit to the fuel pump or it is bypassed. The idea is to not put as much voltage to the fuel pump under idle or low load conditions. However, under high power conditions, such as when you punch it or drive up a steep hill - which usually also brings in the supercharging, then the circuit bypasses the resistor to give the fuel pump more voltage and, hence, more fuel pumping capacity to meet the higher fuel demand.

The resistor is located in a bad spot where it can pick up lots of road debris, slush, dirt, etc. Thus, it can fail. When that happens, you can start the car but then the resistor circuit is activated and, because the resistor has failed, no voltage gets to the fuel pump and it shuts off, then the car shuts off. If you immediately hold the accelerator down after starting the car (but not to overspeed the engine), the engine will keep running but at a very high RPM.

The fix is to replace the resistor, or bypass it altogether. The resistor is located on the inner front tire wheel fender on the passenger side. If I remember correctly, you get to it under the car, but you may also have to access it by opening the hood and reaching down from the top. It was 10 years ago when I fixed mine and I do not remember. This fixed the problem for me. I hope it works well for you. If you have other questions, you can reach me at
