Question about Ford Taurus

1 Answer

I have a 1999 Taurus SHO. I know the alternator is going on it (maybe that would solve my problem??). The check engine light came on today also and auto zone said O2 sensor. No big deal. My problem is the speedometer and trip meter aren't working, along with the radio and a/c. The fuel gauge and RPMs work fine. I had put a fuse in it and smoke came out from behind the cluster. Maybe a short?? Thanks for any suggestions!!

the smoke is come in black do you know why
your [ ecu ] calculates the amount of fuel / air mixture in wrong way what dos it mean ? your car get more fuel than it need or it able to burn it all so will consume more fule and bring a black smoke with smell of rar unburned raw gasoline

Alternator replaced

The different engine applications that the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable are equipped with utilize different types of alternators. The following is a list of vehicle applications. For 1986-90 vehicles:

The 3.0L and the 3.8L engines utilize a side terminal alternator.

The 2.5L and the 3.8L (with Police Package only) engines utilize an alternator with an integral rear mount regulator and an internal fan.

The 3.0L SHO engines utilize an alternator with an internal fan and regulator. For 1991-93 vehicles:

The 2.5L, 3.0L and 3.8L engines utilize an alternator with a rear mount regulator and an internal fan.

The 3.0L and 3.2L SHO engines utilize an alternator with an internal regulator and fan.For 1994-95 vehicles:

The 3.0L, 3.8L and 3.0L SHO engines utilize an alternator with a rear mount regulator and an internal fan.

The 3.2L SHO vehicles utilize an alternator with a internal regulator and fan.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Loosen the alternator pivot bolt, then remove the adjusting bolt.
3. Remove the alternator drive belt from the drive pulley.
4. Tag and disengage the wiring terminals from the back of the alternator. The stator and the field wiring are the push-on type of retainer. After depressing the lock tab, the connector should be pulled straight off of the terminal to prevent damage.
5. Remove the alternator pivot bolt, then remove the alternator from the engine.
6. Position the alternator on the engine.
7. Install the alternator pivot bolt and the adjusting bolt, but do NOT tighten the bolts until the drive belt it tensioned.
8. Engage the wiring terminals to the alternator, as tagged during removal.
9. Install the drive belt over the alternator drive pulley, then adjust the belt tension using Belt Tension Gauge 021-00019, or equivalent.

When adjusting belt tension, apply pressure on the front housing only.

10. Tighten the adjusting bolt to 30-45 ft. lbs. (41-61 Nm), then tighten the pivot bolt to 50-70 ft. lbs. (68-94 Nm).
11. Connect the negative battery cable.

Hope helps.

IT is a 1998 taurus SHO model very rare it seems to be. Why can't I find a place that will sell me a Ford Taurus Manual for a 1996-1999 taurus SHO model with the 3.4 V8 yamaha engine.

If you are looking for a haynes manual or something which are based on complete tear down and rebuilds of the car, i would see if on the book itself it lists your engine, yamaha only made one car engine really and it was for the SHO which is fantastic however rare, look online and in google for a manual that lists your car, if you are not a fan of buying online, try phoning a company but unless the book you are searching does not list your engine it might cover all the rest but not your powertrain.

Here is a book i found online its a chilton.

First check the alternator drive/serpentine belt and make sure it is tight and not worn out. Replace it if it is cracked or glazed. Clean the battery cables and battery posts. With a voltmeter check the voltage at the battery with the engine running. If you have less than 13.5 volts the alternator needs replacing.

1999 ford taurus will crank and run for a short time and then stall what is the problem

after it dies will it crank again right away? if not then the alternator is to blame. its the generator for the cars electrical systems. fords are well known for not illuminating a battery light when the alternator fails, the sensor that does this is in the alternator, its part of the soild state regulator. when key on engine off, little red battery light should be on and go off after engine starts, if stays on, alternator is bad, or belt is off. let me know what you find and if you need more help

99 taurus won't start,power windows,locks

aDVANCE AUTO --they should be able to test it all if you don't have a volt meter with a dc setting
there is a way to field test the alternator easily --but you need the volt meter --one red lead goes to a Grounding cut on --small in the back of the alternator and the black to a good ground I use the battery neg or a bolt on the engine accessory bractets ---you insert the red lead probe into the
ground plane slot --while cranking needs to exceed 13volts to considered charging
or you can use a Clamp on meter on the positive wire coming from the alternator too
I have the 97 SHO ---3.4 v8 ---now that's a hand full
I did have a 99 merc mystique albeit identical to yours though
My SHO alarm system will slowly drain off the battery to when left parked for a week
probably a short to ground or slow draw bleed off ---I haven't even tried to track it yet
I leave it parked --due to law enforcement harassement and I've had a clean license forever
just can't drive to or from without being harassed and it's 100%stock
ford in 2010 launches the 365hp twin turbo ecotec V6 with all wheel drive ---but I already know
ford techs --won't fix them right when things go wrong and they will --heck they won't change
the oil in a late model sho v8 ---"Not Qualified" or 'Not allowed to per ford corp mandate sorry"
No Dealer service available to date --I've been to 27 dealers for service when traveling =no dice
had to go to Lexus for an oil change --Kudos to Lexus

Electrical Demon in my 1999 Taurus SHO

could be a bad diode in the alternator. make sure the car is off with batery conected and charged. need a test light and jumper cable and digital multimeter. disconect only the negative cable conect one end of test light to batery cable and the other end to batery terminal.if the amp draw is higher than 4 amps it will light conect the multimeter to the neg batery cable with red probe and black probe to neg batery terminal . multi meter on (dc 10a) if it reads between 0.8amps and 1.5amps a light is on or a relay is stuck. to check relays use a old wll charger (phonecharger) cut ends of and connect one wire to 85 and other to 86 on realy it should click. now use the multimeter select continuity and see if it beeps. if it does it works. now remove the phonecharger. and reconet the multi meter to 30 and 87 on relay it should not beep. buy a multi meter from wall mart (innova ) for $30

97 sho, my headlights wont come on and my parking lights wont go off??? replaced multi-function switch and the headlight switch

With my 98 Taurus with the same problem, simply replacing the fuse solved both problems. The fuse is under the hood - it was the small 30amp on the toward the engine side under the relays.
