When I turn the key, why does the fuel pump keep running?

please keep wallet away from car.....
no car stated, is it really a jeep
what model jeep
what enigne (it is an engine fuel system quesiton) so?
4 liter? (5 million made so my wild guess)
there are 50 years of jeeps, now.. im clueless, as to what you have. the first that can do that is about 1988, (first EFI jeep)
ok read your other posts, all asking for where things car.
1997 Sport 4.0l 6 cyl. a sport what?
this must be your first ever car repair. DIY?
that it? a CHEROKEE. (i had a 99)
here ill post your limited symptoms.
car wont start. but crank fast (does it crank fast?)
if yes, that is a no start.
the pump runs key on, let it. many jeeps do that.
this keeps the fuel injection pressure at spec. so forget that.
The ECU controls all that. (the EFI brain does ALL that)

so here is the list on no starts for all 1997 XJ's
check all fuses first. after all its electronic Fuel injection (EFI) so the fuses to the EFI brain and spark must all be good.
KEY on, the dash cluster CEL lamp must glow, DOES IT?
if not bingo. no power to EFI.

  1. got spark to all cylinders all 6, not just one? (new plugs but id bet those HV wires are junk if 18 years old.
  2. connect the scan tool (i do this first but...) scan it cranking for 5 full seconds, release the key, bingo DTC errors Rigth?
  3. IF you have DTC errors, for spark parts, or CMP or CKP sensors then the car will not start.
  4. if how ever spark is ok,? you can start the engine using TEST FUEL (spray fuel sold in cans called starting fluid)
  5. spray the main induction pipe, (air cleaner box lid off)
  6. starts for 3 seconds? yes /no.
  7. if it starts, that is a good sign, for 2 or 3 seconds
  8. The scan tool NOW, can shows up to 6 errors, DTCs for dropping the ASD relay, this relay when dropped cuts all fueling ( a safety device preventing crash and burn as seen on TV)
  9. The ASD is covered in the FSM and here.

"automatic shut down relay"
ASD tricks

working without a cheap scan tool, will make you broke fast
like working blind. why do that?
even a $10 tools works. this year, before canbuss

My 92 jeep cherokee sport won't start getting fire and gas and has a slight back fire when turning over changed cranking sensor but still will not start what else could cause this?

old old jeeps..... which engine, the 4.0L inline 6? why not say ?
well here are the proper linear steps.
1: fuses good battery charged, and cranks robustly.
2: compression over 150psi, WOT. if not fix that. ?
3: spark strong to all cylinders not just 1.?
4: spark timing check show its still firing near 0 TDC.
5: at the point in time, it will run on test fuel for at least 3 seconds.
does it, feel better now? that you can see it run?
if not the CAT may be melted and blocking engine exhaust 100%
6; and last is fueling (the ECU cuts fuel or 3 reasons, )
dead cam/crank sensors, or dead tacho line.
7: ok check fuel pressure next.

i skipped the all important scantool because we dont have one
1988 to 92.. (not until 1993 do they work OTC tools)

did you do the magic key on off test>/
keyon 3 times, might work on latter 92s.....

the crank sensor is tricky to replace.
its not just jammed in a hole.
did you read the FSM Book first. before touching it.
some have a paper sticky tape on the end (jeeps do)
and when you start car first time, the tape flies off getting that critical gap correct. (pure magic no?)
if not done right, you now have 2 problems.... not good that.

How to fix 1999 jeep cherokee sport

You mean it cranks but does not start, right ?
The NoBus on the display means the cluster is not talking to the computer. That could be a wiring problem or a component problem.
Have you checked the engine computer for trouble codes ?

1991 land cruiser inline 6 running fine then died while driving. Electrical seems ok, engine cranks but won't start. Fuel pump? Alternator? thanks

check for spark first. if theres spark then crack a fuel line while trying to crank to c if theres fuel getting pumped to the injectors. always start with the basics then go from there.

Engine dies during drive and wont start up

Check the in line fuel filters. Dirt and debris can clog the filter under vacuum pressure from fuel pump and starve the engine. After the car sits and the vacuum is released, the debris falls away from the filter allowing the fuel to pass thru the filter until it clogs up once again. There are also in tank filters but more than likely the culprit is the inline. They are pretty inexpensive and easy to fix.

88 ford f150 inline 6 wont start...

check to see that you have fuel all the way to the do this: pull the fuel pump fuse and, crank the engine a few times to releive pressure then open the fuel line, cover it with a rag for safety then: replace the fuse and, crank the engine just for a second or, two if no fuel comes out it's another fuel filter probably on the truck frame rail that is the problem or, low pressure from the fuel pump

Wont start!

it is a possibility that the cps is bad. but also check to see if your car has a safety which will shut the car off if the oil pressure drops to low some vehicles have an automatic shutoff to save the engine. have you checked for codes the cps will throw a trouble code if it is bad, usually. check all your basics as well adequate fuel, spark etc. hope this helps some

97 Grand Cheeroke wont start in the morning when its cold out

Is it fuel injected or carb??? Try holding the gas pedal to the floor while turning the jeep over. This sometimes makes gas pump thru to the cylinders. Have you changed the fuel filter???? I know alot of jeeps have a fule filter with a bypass back to the tank, and sometimes the filter will be bypassing to the tank instead of the the motor. Check it out?????
