Your car is not exactly in time. It may be 1 or 2 teeth off, but will still cause a huge problem.

I have just changed out a 1200 vw motor and set the timing at 6 1/2 the motor runs good.but when I test drive it it studers ,is low on power

IF EXHAUST BACK FIRES MIXTURE IS TOO RICH-TURN SMALL CARB SCREW ANTICLOCKWISE A TOUCH WITH ENGINE HOT AND TEST DRIVE.
if you get spitback in carb.sounds abit like a back fire but causes lurching-bucking effect on road then mix is too lean-opposite of above-turn small screw a touch clockwise
take out spark plug to see if its tip is black mix is too rich
if its white it is too weak
spark plug should be slightly brown for healthy engine

Have you a spart tester?to be sure spark is low if so you might consider the coil being changed. Also change spark plugs once these are soaked is gas time to through them out and replacefor starting reasons and performance to.

Replaced the plug wires, and now I have a slight miss at idle ?

Possibly a bad plug wire in the new set ..it happens.

Or you may have got two or more wires in the wrong firing order

Engine Back fired, blew out muffler.

Sounds like you may have gotten some debris in your exhaust pipe or something was clogging your muffler. Maybe the innerds of you Catalytic Coverter went and got stuck or the innerds of your muffler gave out. That would be the only few things I could think of to cause something like that.

Sincerely,

JC
