Question about 1990 Volvo 740

4th gear locked out on 1990 740 volvo wagon

My 4th gear lockout light is on and the switch won't turn it off (orange up arrow on ist. cluster.) I bypassed the switch to see if it failed and it has not and i also replaced the overdrive relay but still get the arrow-anything else i can try-I can't believe Volvo engineers built a system that fails to a worst case mode.

    I have a 1992 740 Turbo. The overdrive light is on and will not switch off.

    I found the the fuse was blown and replaced it but the fuses are continually blown after a few seconds.

    Can it be he relay or is the solenoid dirty??

    i have a 1990 volvo 740 gle. it wont shift into 4th gear and its not the 4th gear disingager. i have already replaced the relay for this. what else could be the problem?

Sounds like your overdrive solenoid is dirty or broken. Take off the solenoid and clean it really well, put it back on and see if it works. If not you will have to replace it.
This happened to my fathers and I had to clean it.
Sometimes the tranny oil is so dirty that little bits of metal get stuck in the solenoid area and you have to scrape them off. You might want to do a tranny flush if it's bad.

How do I get the stuck right rear window on my 2001 Volvo V70 up?


It could be one of three issues, so start with the first and free step. Ensure the child lockout switch below the rear window switches on the main window switch cluster is ON. If its off then it shuts off power entirely to both rear windows as a child safety feature. Second, slowly and repeatedly close all vehicle doors, then lock and unlock the doors remotely 5 times with a pause of about 20-30 seconds between each lock and unlock attempt. Usually after the 5/5 time the windows should start working properly again. Third, the main window switch cluster may need to be replaced. Checkout eBay item numbers 161698032254 or 151307494170. You can change the switch yourself with simple tools if need be. Short of these options, you'll need to visit a mechanic and have it properly checked and fixed.

2000 volvo S40 speedometer won't work, ABS light on, Starts out in 4th gear


I had same issues on my 99 S80, turned out to be the spline gears on the end of the CV Axles that send signal to Wheel Speed Sensors. Their is one on each wheel, but the ones that gave me all the issues where only the front two. Problem was had to replace the entire CV Axle to be able to get new spline gear, but was only about $60, so was worth it.

This is straight out of the owner's handbook. What this indicates is that there may be a problem with the shift solenoid. On the highway, does is seem to rev high? Can you press the button on the shifter and have the light go out? let me know.

What is happening is the tranny is going. They can try to replace the selenoid, but really, you need a rebuild. Whomever charged you to remove the light, probably messed things up more. Volvo's typically lose overdrive before losing all the other gears. It is time for a rebuild. Go to a reputable tranny shop who knows volvos.

IT STAYS ON (ARROW POINTS UP)


You don't say whether it is a manual or Automatic trans ( they both have an electric overdrive). Assuming it is an Auto trans the problem is most likely the Orange colored OD relay to the left and behind the Glove box. Or the push switch on the gear selector may have an open circuit but less likely.

If your talking about the orange arrow, it's the Overdrive indicator light. Try pushing the O/D button on your gear shifter to see if it gose out

Hang up in third gear loss of power


Hi All

I have a s40 1.9d / 2000 plate,
In the last month or so the car loses revs when changing up to 3rd and 4th gear, I can only get 50 mph max in 3rd gear 80mp in 4th.
The car has just clocked 185,000 miles
Its a great car but a pai at the moment, I've had a service including fuel fillter change added fuel cleaners to the deilsel all to no avail


Any suggestions

You need to replace the overdrive relay located inside the center cosole on the right side about even with the blower switch.

Trans drops into 3rd gear won,t shift to 4th


DTC P0734 is "4th gear incorrect ratio" - that's your torque converter 'LOCK UP Clutch" It's worn out (or you're using the wrong Trans Fluid required by Hyundai - SPIII OR Both). The P1624 is simply the Trans Control Unit (computer) communicating to the Engine Control Module (ECM computer) MIL - on request signal to ECM = asking it to turn on "Check Engine" light. MIL = Malfunction Indicator Lamp. When the torque converter 'lock up" clutch slips or doesn't engage, the trans automatically returns to 3rd gear and stays there (it's called 'fail safe' mode) until you cycle the ignition key, then everything resets until the malfunction occurs again.
You'll need to have an AT (Automatic Transaxel) tester hooked up to verify this. Hyundai has a Service Bulletin specifically for "gear incorrect ratio' codes. If when you changed the trans fluid, was it done at a Hyundai Service Center? If not, someone may have installed the wrong fluid.

Where roy might have a possible source, it is most likely the park neutral switch which has started to fail. This is indicated by the shift arrow flashing on the dash. Replacement of this component is relatively difficult without a lift
