Question about 1992 Dodge Spirit

3 Answers

92 Spirit wont start. Found a burnt wire in 7 wire plug on ignition switch. 5th wire from red wire (gray with black stripe and small connector in plug). Any idea where it goes or it's function? I have a Chilton manual and the wiring diagram section doesn't show anything for this. Thanks in advance, Ron

    92 Dodge Spirit ignition switch problem. When the key is turned to the start or run position, it won't start and in the run position no dash dummy lights come on. The battery is fine (inside lights come on). also in the run position heater fan won't work, blinkers won't work etc. There is a 7 plug connector that plugs into the ig switch and the 5th wire from the red is fried. the wire is gray with a black stripe and has a small plug.

    Thanks in advance,
    Ron

    The schematics you sent have a little more info than the chilton I have. I,ll check em out and get back to you.

    Much appreciated,

    Ron

    Thanks for the advice. I may have to seek outside physical help on this one because of health issues (I am having back surgery #5 real soon followed by shoulder surgery when I,m healed enough. Too much fun when younger, raced motocross flat track and Score desert in a buggy.) The car belongs to my father in law. Any chance the ignition switch failed and took out the wire? The receptacle for the 7 wire harness shows signs of melting on the 2 lugs next to the one with the fried wire.

    Gracias,

    Ron

This is off the top of my head, and I could be wrong, but I think that wire may go to the starter solenoid. Check the solenoid to see if it's shorted by measuring it's resistance. Your manual should tell tou what the resistance should be, but obviously a 0 ohm reading is a dead short, and the solenoid and that wire will need to be replaced.

    Check the solenoid anyways, and replace the wire, it's probably a power line to the ignition switch.

    Replace the wire. If it burns again, check the starter solenoid resistance.
    Avoid using the heater unless testing to see if that's the issue.
    This wire likely brings power to the ignition switch.

I am also not familiar with the wire you are referring to. This is most likely a wire for an accessory or an aftermarket equipment. Installed by the dealer or a shop. Manuals usually contain only factory wiring. The best way to check this out is to trace the wire. If it goes into the main harness and its cover check the other side where it branches out and look for the wire. It may lead you to the fuse box or relay. If it is the fuse box there may be a short fuse somewhere. If it does have a fuse it may have blown out refer to the manual the fuse. If it is a fuse found in the manual then you should get which part it is. Someone may have changed the wiring sometime in the car's lifetime. However there are also provisions for fuse for accessories.

Note:
using an optional snap on wire harness adapter will simplify the wiring. Most snap on
wire harness adapters have already converted and color coded the wires from the auto
makers in dash wire harness to match typical aftermarket radio wire colors.
** The wire colors listed in the chart above are typical for these vehicles during these years
but may not be the exact colors for this vehicle. This is another reason to use a snap on
wire harness adapter. **

Grey cable in dash

Hi again,

Appreciate the update and additional information. If I understand it right, your vehicle then has two connectors at the back: 1 big black/red/gray plug:
  • Yellow/light Green - always ON B+12;
  • Yellow/Black stripe - ACC B+12 goes to the IGN switch;
  • Black - chassis/ground;
  • Blue - remote trigger for add-on amplifier (if connected);
  • Blue/Red stripe - illumination (can go to parklight switch).
and the 2nd smaller gray 8pin plug:
  • White/Red Stripe Right Front +
  • Brown right front -
  • Green Left Front +
  • White/Orange Stripe Left Front -
  • Light Blue/Black Stripe Left Rear +
  • Yellow Left Rear -
  • White/Blue Stripe Right Rear +
  • Light Blue Right Rear -
Cheers.
