1234 is the firing order ,no1 is front left ,no3 is back left no4 is back right and no2 is front right hence 1234 as cap goes round ,also renew the rubber flex pipe on the left side of the inlet manifold that goes to the pipe that runs to the front of the car for the servo as they become porous and sucks in air causing 1 and 3 left side of engine to not fire up on idle so its shakes and is all lumpy till you rev it

Colin, I have a 72 beetle that i stripped back to transform into a dune buggy, with it not running for the year i was building the frame i have neglected the engine however today i tried to get it running. Petrol on the sparks and sparks making sparks so it must be my order thats wrong, my haynes manual says that the firing order is 1-4-3-2 and frount right being 1, f/l being 2, r/r being 3 and r/l being 4. Is the manual wrong because it keeps missfiring?

I just put an engine in a 1972 VW bug just won't start firing order is fine top dead center is fine just turns but doesn't want to turn over

Hi Timothy:
Old Dude wisdom..........
- Fire at the plugs and
- Fuel in the jugs

If everything else is OK it should run. Not necessarily well, but it should run.

What to do?
1) Check for hot blue spark at the plug electrodes
2) Check for fuel in the carb.

If you have spark, give it a shot of gas into the carb, and give it a try. If it doesn't start, backfires, or catches fire, you'll need to double check the timing and plug lead firing order.

Not kidding! Don't set fire to it!.

I have a 73 vw bug. distributor wiring diagram

ok there is two ways too do this the right way is get the firing order for the car . there should be timing marks on the front of the engine above the crank pully and a mark on the pully turn the crank over tapping the ign. switch until the mark lines up with the 0 then remove the distributor cap mark the cap with something were the rotor is pointing that is #1 going clockwise in the firing order will staiten you out. if you didnt understand what I was talking about I would recomend a going too a shop next time you need a tune up instead of doing it youself

1972 VW Bug ignition switch

Put the Key in the ignition and turn the key. It should disengage the steering lock and you should be able to pull it out. Make sure you unplug the switch from the back.
Here are some really old pics of my 1972 beetle... http://ilikepie.it/VWbug.html
