Question about Chevrolet Silverado 1500

2005 4x4 chevy silverado, can't get rodor off, has an outer bearing off where axle goes through. should just slide off, can push shaft back in but can't get rodor off

Tap the rotor around with a hammer, sometimes where they connect they rust on there. Just make sure when doing it not to damage the rotor

Replacing axle seals requires removing the differential cover,removing the spur gear bolt/shaft,removing the C clip,then sliding the axle out.You will have to press the bearing off of the axle to remove the seal,which usually will break the bearing(might as well replace it anyway on an '85).Removing and replacing the bearing should be done with a shop press.

How do I remove the rear axle


The rear axle shaft?? Or the entire axle? I'm going to go with the axle shaft. Secure the vehicle. Loosen the lug nuts. Jack it up. Take the wheel and tire off. Remove the caliper and/or bracket. Remove the rotor. Place a pan under the rear differential cover. Remove the rear differential cover. Spin the axle shaft to reveal the center pin. Locate the 8mm-5/16 bolt that holds the center pin in place. Remove that bolt. Slide the center pin out, BUT DON'T TURN THE AXLE SHAFTS WHILE ITS OUT! Push the axle shaft in from the outer portion (where the wheel goes). A "C" clip will fall out inside of the differential. Pull the axle shaft out. Slide the center pin back in. Replace the 8mm-5/16 locking bolt and spin it a few times to keep everything in place.

How do you replace a front wheel shaft rubber boot


Split wrap around boots are not a good option. If your axle joint is in good shape rebooting is an option. It is extremely messy and often takes a special tool to install the new boot clamps. A new axle or a factory rebuilt is always a good option. Beware of local rebuilders they may short cut and not replace all the worn parts.
With the wheel on the ground take off the axle nut, jack up the car, take off the wheel, unbolt the strut, take off the caliper, pull the disc and bearing holder down, and pull the axle out the back side. Pull the axle out of the transmission and take it over to your bench. Remove the inner boot clamps, pull back the inner boot from the transmission bearing cup. There is a large ring clip holding the bearing into the cup , remove the clip and slide the inner cup off of the bearing. With a circlip plier remove the clip from the end of the shaft and slide the inner bearing off of the shaft. Now take the clamps off of the outer boot and slide the boot down the length of the shaft. Clean all of the parts thoroughly and regrease before reassembly. The new boot has to slide down the length of the shaft, from inside to out side, to be installed on the outer joint.

The Constant Velocity (CV) joints are located on the inner and outer edges of the axle shaft. The axle shaft runs through the hub and bearing in the spindle.

1999 chevy silverado z71 5.3 ujoints just got changed loud squeal in back sound like center of drive shaft / no vibration when driving, no play up/down side to side on drive shaft,is it in the rearend or...


i would suspect bad driveshaft hanger bearing - to confirm, jack up back end of truck and hold up with jack stands. have someone in the truck to accelerate to the speed where you hear the noise, listen for the noise - a stethescope is very useful for this. good luck!

YOU HAVE TO SAFELY RAISE SUPPORT VECHICLE MAKE SURE ITS ON A SOLID LEVEL GROUND.THEN YOU REMOVE THE WHEELS THE BRAKE DRUM OR DISC.THEN YOU REMOVE THE NUTS THAT ATTACH THE OUTER SEAL RETAINER AND BRAKE BACKING PLATETO THE AXLE SHAFT TUBE.DISCARD THE NUTS.REMOVE AXLE SHAFT FROM HOUSING.WITH AN AXLE PULLER ATTACHED TO A SLIDE HAMMER.DISCARD INNER AXLE SEALPOSITION THE AXLE SHAFT IN A VISE.REMOVE THE RETAINING RING BY DRILLING A 1/4 HOLE ABOUT 3/4 OF THE WAY THROUGH THE RING. THEN USING A COLD CHISEL OVER THE HOLE.SPLIT THE RING.REMOVE THE BEARING WITH A ARBOR PRESS DISCARD THE SEAL AND REMOVE THE RETAINER PLATE.TO INSTALL - CLEAN THEN APPLY A THIN COATING OF WHEEL BEARING LUBRICANT TO THE BEARING AND SEAL CONTACT SURFACES APPLY WHEEL BEARING LUBRICANT TO THE LIPS OF THE REPLACEMENT INNER AND OUTER SEALS.INSTALL THE INNER SEAL WITH THE OPEN END OF THE SEAL FACING INWARD ENSURE IT IS COMPLETELY SEATED.INSTALL THE RETAINER PLATE AND THE OUTER SEAL ON THE SHAFT.ENSURE THE OPEN END OF THE SEAL FACES TOWARD THE AXLE SHAFT BEARING.PACK THE REPLACEMENT BEARING WITH WHEEL BEARING LUBRICANT AND POSITION ON THE AXLE SHAFT PRESS INTO PLACE.PRESS A REPLACEMENT BEARING RETAINER ON THE AXLE SHAFT AGAINST THE BEARING.INSTALL THE AXLE INTO THE AXLE TUBE.POSITION AND ALIGN THE SEAL RETAINER AND BRAKE SUPPORT PLATE AND INSTALL REPLACEMENT ATTACHING NUTS.TIGHTEN NUTS TO 32 FT LBS.INSTALL BRAKE ASSEMBLY WHEELS LOWER VECHICLE. How do I do a front drive shaft on a 99 silverado? My ujoint is out towards the back. I can see the front just has the 4 bolts to take that apart. what I am wondering is if the back slides out of the deal...


I see that the solution given is for an axle shaft and not the drive shaft that was asked about. I am 99% sure that if you take out the bolts the other end will slide out of the t-case. Then the u-joint can be replaced as normally done.

Rear Axle Seal Replacement


remove rear tires, then remove brake calipers and rotors, then remove the 4 nuts (each side) that hold the axle shafts to the axle tube (located around the axle tube behind the backing plate) then using a slide hammer pull the axle shafts out, next using a die grinder and an air hammer get he retainer collar and the bearing off (without damaging the axle shaft) then remove the seal and the outer race which will still be in the housing. next put it all back together, make sure the plate with the studs is still on then slide the seal, bearing, then retainer on (all new parts) and using a press push them all the way back on. then is simple reassembly.
