Question about 1997 Chevrolet Malibu

I replaced my iacv on my '97 chevy malibu as recommended and after driving 34 of the recommended 40 miles the check engine light came back on....what could be the cause? what can I do to correct the problem?

Have to reprogram iac to specs to do this hold rpm just below rev limiter for 2 minutes then do again should reprogram but turn the light out first by disconnecting negative battery cable

    can you tell me ..What is the REV LIMITER and how do i perform the task of reprograming the iac to specs? i will be using your instructions.

    when you rev the engine it has computer stops so you dont over rev the engine but for your sanity dont rev over 3500rpms just hold it at this rpm for two minutes then let idle make sure it dont over hesat and check engine oil if any other ?s just ask also make sure check engine light is out if engine goes up and down in rpm then drop engine speed to 2700 rpm to get check engine light off disconnect negative battery cable wait 3 minutes then reconnect

My car a 2000 Chevy malibu started over heating and reached 260 degrees and then car randomly shut off.... I Let it cool down put some antifreeze in it and started it back up drove it 15 miles down road...


In a way it has a fail switch, the shut down was triggered by a program in the computer. I would suspect the thermostat stuck closed, suggest you replace it.

I have a 1999 chevy malibu , front wheel drive with a 2.4 litre twin cam engine . the car overheats and water pours out of overflow hose. what is the cause of this?


well, a lot potentially COULD be wrong. here is my list of what to check.

hoses for deterioration and sponginess, its unlikely but possible your hoses are collapsing due to poor condition and not letting water flow through it

check thermostat for proper operation ( remove thermostat, compress spring to open it insert string then suspend it in a pan of boiling water. it will fall off the spring at the aprox. temp its set at. if it is stuck closed then its your culprit)

check water pump ( hard to diagnose, some cars have a weep hole at the bottom of the water pump that drips water while running at any temp. )

check antifreeze dilution and condition, water cools better that anti-freeze 50-50 is recommended but in hotter climates 25-75 is more appropriate. also the dirtier it is the worse it cools

ensure your engine fan is operating by running the car and observing it with the hood open. at a specified temp ( 200-230 F neighborhood) it should turn on. If it doesn't then check your fuses and wiring and repair/replace as needed

finally check for a clogged radiator/ flush it. If the car was bought used or you know for a fact the radiator stop-leak pellets were used in it. you will most likely have to replace the radiator

other factors are engine timing (shouldn't be an issue for your year of car)

2005 Chevy Malibu gas cap tightened, chk eng still on.


It needs to be reset probably has a p0440 code in the computer.

My 2002 Chevy Malibu sometimes shifts very slow. I will go from park to drive and there is about a 3 second delay.


I would first check the fluid level. If it is a little low it could cause the slow shift. I would also recommend putting in a can of TRANS X. It will clean up the valves inside of the tranny. I did this with my 2001 malibu and never had trouble again. I have 290,000 miles on it!

check you mileage if the car has over 100,000 miles and you have not had a tune up it maybe time for spark plugs, air filter,fuel filter and spark plug wires if needed

possible the EGR valve may be struck open, recommending take egr off and free up the pintal with wire brush, may have carbon build up. Is your engine light on? If so it could be your IACV.
