Question about 2001 Ford Taurus
depending on which trans it is there is a small dipstick on the trans at the front on the bottom these transmissions take a specific fluid so be careful

The car needs to be running with the transmission warm, (drive around for at least 10 minutes) Place the car in neutral. Pull the stick wipe it off and place it back in the transmission. Reads just like an oil stick, want fluid in the safe range (checked pattern) area.

There is no dipstick on a manual transmission. On a manual tranny, you check the fluid by pulling the fill plug on the side of the transmission. The fluid is supposed to be even with the bottom of the fill plug hole. Gently stuck your finger in there and on a fully serviced trans. you will feel the fluid on your finger tip. On an auto transmission the dipstick is on the passenger side near the exhaust manifold close to the firewall. Also you fill the trans thru the dipstick. Make sure you use the proper fluid and the correct amount.22

on the bottom of the transmission pan you will find a nut with a hex or torx in the middle you remove the center plug when the truck is hot and running on a level serface the trans fluod will dribble out if it does not dribble out it is low if it runs out fast a steedy streem it is over full now their is a part that screws into this for a fill if you remove the pan you will see how it works the pan has a pipe/ stack that when full of fluid the top of the pipe is at the full point if you remove the large nut the stack and plug will come out the best way to change the trans fluid is take it to some place that has a fluid exchange equment this will get all the fluid out including the torque converter

Does not have a dip stick.
Start the vehicle set park brake
In the side if the transmission oil pan a bigger bolt with a small bolt in the center.
Remove smaller center bolt trans fluid should drip out at a fairly constant rate if not its low.

Drive the car for several miles or until the engine has reached its normal temperature, as indicated by the temperature gauge. Position the vehicle on a flat surface, shift the transmission to the "Park" position and apply the parking brake.Raise the hood and allow the vehicle to idle.
Withdraw the transmission's dipstick. The dipstick features a T-shaped handle with the words "Trans. Fluid" stamped into the top of the handle.Wipe the dipstick clean of any transmission fluid with a clean shop rag. As the vehicle is driven, transmission fluid may splash onto the dipstick, resulting in a false fluid level reading.Insert the dipstick into its tube until the handle rests securely against the top of the tube, then withdraw the dipstick and note the fluid level. The fluid level should be at or just below the "Warm Full" mark stamped into the dipstick. If the level is low, fluid must be added.Add Mercon V transmission fluid in small increments to avoid overfilling the transmission. Insert a funnel into the top of the dipstick tube, then pour the transmission fluid into the funnel, periodically checking the fluid level on the dipstick.
