Question about Ford Explorer

1 Answer

1999 Ford Explorer stalls while driving. I bought it from a private seller, and the mechanic that checked it out did a computer diagnostic that said it had no problems. It drove with no problems for the first 100 miles, but now stalls while driving. As long as my foot is on the gas, there are no problems, but it stalls when idling or braking. I have to pull over and restart the car, and it'll run for another 200 feet before stalling again. Any ideas?

1999 ford explorer stalling idling rough converter smoking

Check engine light is supposed to flash if there is a problem...what code are you getting?? Converter smoking may mean that its plugged, try removing the o2 sensor before the cat and see if it runs better. Scan it, and get me a code !! If you don't have a scan diagnostic too most auto part stores will let you borrow one, if you leave your drivers license.

99 Ford Explorer 5.0L Eddie Bauer, 150k miles, California Emissions Current Problem: Surges/stalls after driven 10-15 miles, dies on grades. Sometimes stall can be controlled by feathering gas pedal. ...

Several ideas. Crankshaft sensor can under-record RPM and keep fuel pressure artificially low. Would not show on Tach as it reports to PCM, not dash gauge.

Not being able to clear computer is sign something is wrong. If you look at how diagnostics show each device, they share the ground wire and test continuity through hot side of each appliance for continuity loop.

I do not have wiring diagram, but suggest you look at one to find out what causes trouble code light to activate. Could be bad wire loom or bent pin connector. Check site for TSB's on your model.

I have a 1999 TERRANO QD32ETI engine and the problem which the local agents and private mechanics cannot solve is that when it's on the highways the engine performs well; that is it accelerates perfectly. However, when the vehicle comes to a dead stop, and you go for a quick take off the engine cuts out; it restarts quickly; now, when you make a slow acceleration after stopping the engine does not stall, but this can be a dangerous situation when crossing traffic on the highway or moving off from the traffic lights. We checked the computer, fuel pump and the injectors; our opinions differ and somehow
we feel the problem may be the fuel pump. We would appreciate your comments. Our many thanks for your kind assistance. Thanks Tony.

2004 Explorer Replaced Alternator, but car idle still not right, stalls, ck engine light still on. Car lights when dim and then car died. Mechanic said it was the alternator. Alternator replaced. Car...

You need to put a scanner on the truck and see if any codes are set and if so of course repair them and then clear the codes in the computer with the scanner. I would check the idle air control and the throttle position sensor. I would also check the alternator by starting the truck and then taking off the positive battery cable and the truck should continue to run. If not the alternator that was put on is bad.

1998 ford explorer stalls when driving, have to wait 30 minutes

possible fuel pump. Try spraying starting fluid into breather while someone is cranking engine. if vehicle tries to run it is fuel problem. If not it could be an electrical componet overheating and cooling and restarting. Coils, relays, ecm.

My 2000 ford explorer is stalling, misfiring and cutting off during hot weather driving....could it be a bad pcm, idle control value or something else

I had my 1999 xlt do this to me last month when we were having 95+ degree weather and I was driving in the mountains. It just stalled on me. I let it sit for a half hour and drove fairly slow with the windows down and no air. I was told that it vapor locked on me?? It hasn't acted up since. Who knows!
