Question about Chevrolet Equinox
2 possible causes:
1 - the air fuel mixture is wrong during start-up - either because the temperature sensor of the ECM module is giving weird results or the fuel pressure is too high (the pressure regulator is not doing its job). You will have to verify the connections to the temperature sensor (on the head, near the thermostat) and the fuel pressure in the injector's line.
2 - the switch that gets triggered when the gas valve is closed is not operational - either because the wiring to it is loose or the movement of the valve flap and/or its levers and cables is blocked by something so it doesn't closes all the way. You will need to investigate the gas flap mechanism, starting from the gas pedal and all the way to the gas flap on the intake manifold. In there check all the connections to the sensors and the solenoids.

Do you currently have a check engine light on? If so, have it scanned by your local autoparts store ( which they will usually do for free so you buy parts from them ) and get the code/s they retrieve from the vehicle's computer system. It sounds like you may have a MAF ( mass air flow sensor ) that is failing. Get the codes and let me know.
