Question about Ford Mustang

I changed the fluid in the transmission and found a type of plunger in the pan. It has a o-ring around the fat end. Could not see where it goes.

Thats normal. discard the plunger, this is a factory cap that is used in the shipping of the tranny and is then pushed through to the inside of the pan when dipstick is installed at the factory, just remove it and reinstall the pan, good day.

1999 f-150 w/v8 i dropped the ****** pan and found a plastic dome shaped plunger with o-ring. i have no idea what it is or where it goes. i do know the truck dont go. please help me.


it must be transmission pan! That plastic piece is what is installed at factory when trans is built to plug dip stick hole. When they install dip stick tube they just push the plug into pan it doesn`t bother anything. It has nothing with truck moveing been there since new--- good nluck

Leaking transmission fluid

Im no expert when it comes to fixing cars. Is it possible for me to change a cracked transmision pan on my own?


Yes. You will need a new pan, filter kit, and about 2 gal. of transmission fluid. Check your owners manual to see what type of oil to get, or just ask at the auto parts store. Raise the front end of the car up until you can get under it comfortably. Secure it with jack stands. Get a pan to catch the transmission fluid, as you take out the pan bolts the fluid will begin to leak out so take your time or it will get really messy. After you have removed the pan, change the filter and make sure the gasket sealing surface it clean and free of the old gasket. Make sure the pan is clean and if its a used one, make sure the gasket surface is clean as well. Put the gasket on the pan, put a couple bolts through it to keep it in place and attach it to the transmission first by installing all the bolts and then by snugging them down. Do not over tighten or you will damage the gasket. Then add about a gallon and a half of transmission fluid, start the car and check for leaks. If no leaks are found, lower the car and top off your fluid level to the cold level on the dip stick.

Hello,

Before You change the transmission oil, You need to check if it is due for changing. To check the transmission oil. please follow the steps below:
  1. Open the hood and locate the transmission dipstick. It is in front of the engine on the left side, just behind the radiator cap.
  2. Pull the ring on top of the dipstick to remove it from its tube. Wipe it off with the paper towel and replace it. This will ensure an accurate reading.
  3. Remove the dipstick again an look at the markings at the tip. If the fluid on the stick is below the full line, add more transmission fluid.
  4. Repeat this procedure until the fluid reaches the correct level on the dipstick.

There are different types of engine therefore there are several ways to change their transmission fluid. Unless you got something in there via dipstick its really not necessary to ever change the ATF. It's a messy job because there's no drain plug to change the fluid, but You can do it yourself if you're so inclined. To change the fluid,

  1. You have to get under your vehicle and remove the pan from the bottom of the transmission.
  2. When you loosen the pan, fluid will start to dribble out in all directions so you need a fairly large catch pan. You should also know that removing the pan doesn't drain all of the old fluid out of the transmission. Approximately a third of the old fluid will still be in the torque converter. There's no drain plug on the converter so you're really only doing a partial fluid change. Even so, a partial fluid change is better than no fluid change at all.
  3. A typical fluid change will require anywhere from 3 to 6 quarts of ATF depending on the application, a new filter and a pan gasket (or RTV sealer) for the transmission pan. The pan must be thoroughly cleaned prior to reinstallation. This includes wiping all fluid residue from the inside of the pan and scraping all traces of the old gasket from the pan's sealing surface. Don't forget to clean the mounting flange on the transmission, too.
  4. When the new filter is installed, be sure it is mounted in the exact same position as the original and that any O-rings or other gaskets have been properly positioned prior to tightening the bolts. Then tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's recommended specs.
  5. When refilling the transmission with fresh fluid, be careful not to allow any dirt or debris to enter the dipstick tube. Using a long-neck funnel with a built-in screen is recommended.
  6. Do not overfill the transmission. Too much fluid can cause the fluid to foam, which in turn can lead to erratic shifting, oil starvation and transmission damage. Too much fluid may also force ATF to leak past the transmission seals.
  7. Add half a quart at a time until the dipstick shows full. The transmission really isn't full yet because the dipstick should be checked when the fluid is hot, and the engine is idling with the gear selector in Park. So start the engine, drive the vehicle around the block, then recheck the fluid level while the engine is idling and add fluid as needed until the dipstick reads full.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION


See Figures 1 and 2
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  2. Place a drain pan under the transmission.
  3. Loosen the pan attaching bolts and drain the fluid from the transmission.

Always place used fluids and oils into a sealed storage container and take to an approved recycling collection facility. Never dump used fluids or oils on the ground or in a trash receptacle. Contamination to the environment can and will occur.
  1. When the fluid has drained to the level of the pan flange, remove the remaining pan bolts working from the rear and both sides of the pan to allow it to drop and drain slowly.

Some AOD transmissions will have a plastic plunger type plug floating loosely in the pan when draining the fluid. It is of no importance and was used in the assembly process of the transmission. Discard it before reinstallation of pan.
  1. When all of the fluid has drained, remove the pan and clean it thoroughly. discard the pan gasket. If equipped, remove the pan magnet.

To install:
  1. Place a new gasket on the pan, then install the pan on the transmission. If equipped, don't forget to install the pan magnet. Tighten the pan attaching bolts as follows:

    C3 and C5 Transmissions: 12-16 ft. lbs. (16-22 Nm) A4LD Transmissions: 8-10 ft. lbs. (11-13.5 Nm) AOD Transmissions: 71-119 inch lbs. (8-13 Nm) 4R70W Transmissions: 9-11 ft. lbs. (12-15 Nm)
  2. Add the correct type and quantity of fluid to the transmission through the filler tube.
  3. Lower the vehicle. Start the engine and move the gear selector through shift pattern. Allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature.
  4. Check the transmission fluid. Add fluid, if necessary, to maintain correct level.


FILTER SERVICE


See Figure 3
  1. Remove the transmission oil pan and drain the fluid. For details, please refer to the procedure located earlier in this section.
  2. Remove the screen and the filter from the valve body. Most screens are retained using a fastener; through some may use an interference fit between the screen tube and valve body.

To install:
  1. Install a new filter using a new gasket or O-ring.

If the transmission uses a filter equipped with a fully exposed screen, it may be cleaned and reused.
  1. Install the transmission oil pan and properly refill the transmission.

Found a plastic plunger looking part with an o ring when i took off the transmission cover on my 98 mustang. No idea what it is or where it goes


What you most likely are seeing is a plug that the factory puts in the filler tube of the transmision to keep foreign objects from accidentally getting into the transmission while the car is going down the assembly line. Once the transmission is ready to be filled with fluid this usually tan or white plug gets pushed into the pan area and will stay safely there until someone removes the pan for service work at which point it can be discarded.

Change Transmission Fluid


Drain the Transmission Fluid and Replace the Filter
Raise, support and level the blazer on jack stands or ramps. Place a drain pan that can hold at least 4 quarts of fluid beneath the transmission.
Employ a socket wrench to remove the retaining bolts on the fluid pan, except for the two on either end. Loosen the two bolts on the lower end of the pan. Gently pull down on the edge of the pan so that it separates from the transmission case. Let the fluid drain. You may need to tap the pan with a rubber hammer to separate the pan from the case.
Remove the last four bolts and the pan when the fluid finishes draining. Loosen the bolts a little at a time, allowing the remaining fluid to drain. Clean the pan and the magnet inside.
Scrape the old sealant from the pan flange with an appropriate scraping tool. Do the same on the mating surface of the transmission case.
Remove the filter, Look for the filter and the O ring between the filter and valve body and remove it.
Install the new transmission fluid filter and gasket. Place the new gasket on the mounting flange of the fluid pan. Replace the fluid pan on the transmission and tighten the bolts to 165 inch pounds with a torque wrench. Return the Blazer to the ground.
Replace the New Transmission Fluid
Pour 4 quarts of ATF fluid into the filler tube using a funnel. Start the engine and let it idle for a minute or two. Apply the parking brake and the service brake. Move the gear selector through the gears and stop at "Park" or "Neutral.
Add enough fluid to bring the level to 1/8 inch below the "Add" indicator, if needed. Let the van run for another 10 to 20 minutes to allow the engine and transmission to reach a normal operating temperature
Check the fluid level again to ensure it reached the "Hot" indicator on the dipstick. Add more fluid if needed and replace the dipstick in the filler tube. Turn off the engine.
Good luck and hope this helps. Note the 4X4 wire harness bracket needs to be removed and just place it out of the way and if you have a cell phone, just take a picture of it before you disconnect it so you have a reference on how it goes back together.

How to change the automatic transmission oil and filter. On 4 cylinder engine


Check fluid level every 12 months or 7500 miles, whichever comes first. Transmission fluid and filter should be changed every 100,000 miles. On THM 250C transmissions, intermediate (front) band requires adjustment every 60,000 miles, or as required.
1. With vehicle on level surface, apply parking brake and let engine run at curb idle. Move selector lever through all ranges, ending in "PARK". Remove dipstick and wipe clean, reinstall, then remove again and check fluid level mark on dipstick. Fluid level should check between "ADD 1 PT." and "FULL HOT" marks on dipstick.
RECOMMENDED FLUID Use only Dexron II or equivalent automatic transmission fluid.
CAUTION: If vehicle has been operated for an extended period of time at high speed, or in city traffic in hot weather, or if vehicle has been pulling a trailer, an accurate fluid level cannot be determined until fluid has cooled down (approximately 30 minutes after vehicle has been parked).
So let's get started... 1. With vehicle raised and drain pan placed under transmission, remove front and side transmission oil pan bolts. Loosen rear pan bolts approximately 4 turns each.
2. Carefully pry pan loose with screwdriver, allowing fluid to drain. Remove remaining bolts and oil pan with gasket. Remove screen/filter-to-valve body bolts and remove screen/filter with gasket.
3. Thoroughly clean pan and screen with solvent and dry with compressed air. Paper type filters should be replaced. Install new gasket or "O" rings, lubricated with clean oil, into screen/filter assembly.
4. Install screen/filter assembly to transmission. Use new pan gasket and install pan. Add proper amount of fluid to transmission through filler tube.
5. Start engine with shift selector lever in "PARK" position and with parking brake set. Check fluid level and add as required. CAUTION: DO NOT overfill.

that is / was a shipping plug , they just stab the dipstick tube in the hole and it pushes that plug inside transmission where it causes no harm , production , what are ya gonna do . just throw it away .
