Read the label. On the bottle there should be a list of the older transmission fluids that this is acceptable for replacement. If Dexron 2 or 3 is not on that list, don't use it. Transmission fluids are made to different specifications based on the manufacturer's wishes and therefore are not interchangable without creating problems.
If there is no list on the bottle, don't use it. Find a different type that tells you it is compatable with Dexron 2 or 3. Hope this helps.

I have a 1991 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 318 engine I cannot find out what transmission it has so after I pulled it I found this set ofnumbers on it D4461106 with this after it 2X with the number 4 over the D44...

The 4 speed transmission electric overdrive is a A500 or A618 old numbers now called a 42re transmission both take the same pan gasket and filters. Fluid type is located on dip stick ATF (7176) sames as dex II/merc ATF plus fluids are a special mix use ONLY that type.

Transmission shifts sometimes

You ned to be absolutely sure that the transmission shop used the PROPER ATF fluid! since Chrysler needs Chrysler ATF+3 fluid to behave properly. ATF+4 is a newer fluid and can be used if ATF+3 isn't available. Plus, you need to be certain the shop really changed the whole contents of old fluid, since about 45% of it is inside the torque converter, requiring a complete FLUSHING, not only replacing the 5 quarts from the tranmission pan. That is about 9 quarts in all.

Will valvoline dex/merc transmission fluid work for my dodge grand caravan? Does the caravan require dextron III/ mercon

Probably isn't a good idea to run regular ATF. Most chrysler products including your Caravan require ATF +4 or equiv. Typically it is more expensive than regular Atf. Most auto parts stores will stock this.

What kind of transmission fluid? The auto parts store tells me ATF+4, my Chilton's Manual tells me Dexron II. I don't believe either really knows what they're talking about...

You should know that using ANY Dexron/Mercon fluid is not recomended, and has shown to lead to transmission failure.

MOPAR ATF +3 is the factory fluid. But, MOPAR has made a new fluid called ATF +4. Chrysler has posted a TSB saying that ATF +4 should be used now.

Can you mix ATF Plus 3 with ATF Plus 4 transmision fluid?

No, this is more likely an indication that you have deeper problems within the transmission.

Transmission stopped working in forward gears

using dextron 3 in asystem designed for dex 2 will not have any detromental effects. Now using dex 2 in a system designed for dex 3 is not can go up dex 2 to dex 3.NEVER use dex 2 in a systen designed for dex 3.There are several diffrent additives and many types have become synthetic so be careful.

98 toyota camry transmission service.

You can drain and fill your trans. It will take 2.5 -3.0 quarts of DEX III trans fluid....goes in the fill tube. Or you can get said transmission flushed which changes all fluid including torque converter.....about 15 quarts. Way more thorough.
