    elix0411,
Any help on where to get a vag-com scan tool or where to purchase the airbag spiral spring and wiring harness? Or how to get information about how to replace those things? I don't feel you answer was worth $12.

Thanks Elix. If it turns out to be the control module or even one of the other parts, is the airbag something that I can attempt to work on myself? The Haines manuals etc caution you not to touch them as do most mechanics. Can I disable the light and horn?

Welcome to Fixya

Get a vag-com scan tool and scan the vehicle. That will tell you what is rthe exact problem of the car. Common problem would be the steering wheel airbag spiral spring and wiring harness that needs to be replaced. Check also the air bad control module, you might need to replace that one also.

Thank you for using Fixya!

VagCom is actually a software. If you have a laptop or another suitable computer, you can get the VAG-Com software and cable from www.ross-tech.com which will effectively turn your computer into a VW scan tool. Either that, or find someone local to you who has a VAG-Com already and see if they would be willing to help you out and scan the airbag control module for you before purchasing any parts.

Ofcourse you can replace the module on your own depends on the level of your expertise. if you are a firs timer, i suggest that you seek help first with local mechinic to assist you. Disabling the light and horn is not a good idea. This indicators will tell you that there is something wrong with the vehicle.

How do you reset airbag light on dash board for 2006 VW passat?

There is never a reason to go to a dealer for anything

A dealer is just a large repair shop, nothing special there

Read the questions on this site alone

The people here are here because a dealer can't fix their own products

You have a malfunction indicator lamp on SRS System Air Bag Light

You have problems that need to be diagnosed & resolved

Surely you have check lights & such on other vehicles once a year
or more as everyone does, those thing have been with us for 32 years

Where is the horn on a 2008 passat?

Hi, the original manufacturer's horn is behind the passenger side fog light. VW Passat models have one low tone and one high tone horn so you will need to identify the one that you need if you are only replacing one horn.

I went to start my car today. The car started fine, but then a light saying "airbag fault" came on. I went to put the car in reverse and back out of my driveway, and the gear shifter would not move. But it...

Hi,

The Airbag and Transmission circuits are independent of each other.

There is a possibility of a computer malfunction, but this can only be determined by taking the vehicle to your nearest VW Dealership, and have the workshop scan your computer for Fault codes.

This will identify the problem immediately...

Hope this helps....

Vw Passat 1998 B5 - Fail on display

The fail just tells you there is a fault and you need to find out what is causing it. In your case it is the airbag. It's over 10 years old and I'm afraid that's about the limit on an airbag. Sometimes disconnectong and reconnecting the airbag will fix it but don't hold your breath

AIR BAG FAULT WARNING LIGHT KEEPS COMEING WHEN CAR IS STARTED

I had the same problem. My 2008 Passat had to get a faulty rotator that controls the electrical part of the dashboard on the car.First the Air Fault light came on then my whole dashboard went out the next day. I had no horn, no radio, no lights on at all on the dashboard. It was that rotator part that controls the electrics. I was told they are faulty after a few months, they ordered a new one, installed and my car is good as new.

EPS and Check engine light on 2004 Volkswagen Passat Turbo

I note that you posted your question 14 Feb 09, so happy belated Valentine's Day! Anyway, I own a 2004 VW Passat 1.8 and am currently facing the same problem (EPC light and check engine light on) and subsequently, I coded it out, which was P0322. I took my other vehicle (more reliable) into the VW dealership in Olympia Washington. I was going to replace the EPC sensor, which typically handles what is sent to the car's brain, telling it how much gas it needs to run. However, the technicians at the dealership told me to code it out before investing any money without knowing exactly what should be replaced.

I took the code and determined the "crank sensor" was defective. If you call around, you should be quoted anywhere between $48 and $90 respectfully. If your VW was lurching like it was missing for a split second at a usual speed, or died at stops, then I would say you were experiencing the same problem I was having. Hopefully, this will fix your problem? The part is pretty inexpensive, but I think what VW charges to replace the sensor, is highway robbery. Anyone in your family mechanically inclined? Good luck! It's the " clock spring " . Dodge has a lifetime recall / replacement on this part. Somehow it controls the air bag and is tied into the horn and cruise control .
