Question about 2005 Nissan Altima

1 Answer

I have a 2005 V6 Altima. It makes a whining noise when I drive it. If I am coming down a steep hill, the sound I hear is like the gear is stuck and not shifting correctly. When I had my oil replaced yesterday, I was told that I needed to have the timing chain replaced at a cost of $1895. I feel this is an inflated price. Any suggestions...

Sounds to me like they are right on the money. its a pretty common issue on 3.5 litre engine in a altima, maxima murano and quest. you do need upper timing chains and chain tensoiners. its unfortunate that those cars have an issue, but thats what you need. nissan has been pretty reliable vehicle until the new models came out (1999 and up). The upper timing chains are known to go bad even in some 4.0 litre engines. good luck with that, that is a job that requires some car knowledge and mechanical skill to get it done.

2008 Element. Runs like a charm, just had its BIG tuneup done this spring (tires, timing belt, etc). Makes a VERY intermittent high-pitched whine. Doesn't seem connected to anything-not just when cold,...

still bad? doing old zero answer posts. (my bag)
finding noise is hard, and takes skills and can be dangerous.
my guess ????? it makes noise only moving.????
only clue is front, and presume outside of car and not under dash.

if car makes noise moving only, it can be dangerous , driving or even trouble shooting.
does it make noise in turns, or bumps,or loads (hills) or in all gears. or down hill, or coasting.?????
when it starts, does letting of throttle stop it, or more throttle>
or down shifting.? or cutting throttle and shifting to neutral.
I added many check to Doesn't seem connected to anything

my guess is the whine will progress to full time, many times this is true.

good FSM cover noise, here is more.

2005 Altima won't start, hear clicking sound coming from fuse box,key stuck in ingintion, won;t turn over, tried to jump start.

the clicking that you hear is coming from the starter relay. sounds like your ignition starter switch or ignition lock cylinder is bad.

Loud whine then knock in overdrive

well, without hearing the noise myself, i could guess that the torque converter clutch might be going bad. the torque converter is the part that transfers the power from the engine to the transmission via viscous fluid motion, the converter also has a clutch that internally provides a direct connection inside the converter for better fuel economy. but as with anything labeled as a clutch, it wears down to a point where is slips. the noise your hear could be the torque converter clutch slipping. i owned a 90 astro van with the same drivetrain that made a noise similar to what you speak of up hills. while driving up hills, fully depress the accelerator and if the clunking noise occurs, then the whine goes away as you accelerate faster in a lower gear, very likely this is the case. you would have to have a transmission shop diagnose further. i drove that old van for five more years cause i didn't want to pay to have transmission repaired. it can be very expensive.

Service engine soon indicator on and a buzzing/whining noise.

i recommend that you take it into auto-zone or a car shop asap. from what you have described the ticking as, it sounds like a bottom knock. as for the whine i don't know.

Could be a possible break down of the plug wires. Seems that I remember hearing if your plug wires are breaking down inside and if its up against the motor you can hear something that sounds like interference in your radio. Just a thought, might want to check it out.
